Avoid Toxic Lawn Care

Something big has happened in Canada, and I'd love it if we would all celebrate by urging our state governments to follow the Canadians' lead. The provinces of Ontario and Quebec have both banned the use of cosmetic pesticides! These are the type you put on your lawn and spray on your rose bushes. Astonishingly, Home Depot is listening and voluntarily stopping the sale of traditional pesticides in Canada and replacing them with eco-friendly versions.

This is big news because the reason for this is to protect the health of pregnant women and children. Research shows that children who are exposed to pesticides and herbicides have a higher risk of leukemia, among other things.

Skip Herbicides

To avoid weeds, mulch your garden instead. Cover the area with newspapers, then cover the papers with a more decorative mulch. This process will smother any weed growth. Concerns about toxins in newspaper inks are outdated. Pretty mulches include pine needles, hay, stones, straw, seaweed, peat moss-anything you have that is wholesome and abundant. Just avoid cocoa mulch as it is lethal to pets.

Lasting & Far Reaching Effects

Polluted runoff is one of the most serious causes of water contamination. When it rains or snow melts, fertilizers from farms as well as from lawns and gardens, oil from drivewaysm, and paint and solvent residues from walls and decks are all washed into sewers or into local lakes, rivers and creeks. The same sources of water that we rely on for drinking, bathing, and fishing.

Beat Back Weeds

The simplest way to beat weeds is simply to mow high (3-4 inches).

Longer grass will shade the weeds, depriving them of the sunlight they need to prosper. Cutting too low can also weaken your grass plants. The blades are where the plant makes its food and if they're too small the grass will grow faster to compensate. This fast growth uses up resources the plant could be using to make new plants.

Watering infrequently, as strange as it sounds, actually makes for stronger grass plants. The plants are forced to grow their roots in search of water, and dig down deeper than most weeds can manage, leaving the weeds more vulnerable to a dry spell than your grass.

3 Simple Steps To Make Your Lawn Safe and Healthy:

Mow high! Maintain a height of 3 to 3 1/2 inches. Longer grass has deeper roots, and is more drought resistant. It also shades the ground, thus decreasing the amount of weed seeds that can germinate.

Keep your lawn mower blades sharp! Sharp mower blades cut cleanly, instead of tearing the grass blade and making it mores susceptible to disease.

Use an electric or push reel lawn mower! Using a typical four horsepower gas lawn mower for an hour is the equivalent of driving a car 93 miles. Not only do gas mowers emit more CO2, they release hazardous air pollutants as well. (www.greengrasscutters.com). Reduce how much you mow by reducing your lawn's size! Plant native plants, groundcover, shrubs, trees, etc.

Great to hear these unneeded pesticides are starting to be banned. We need more places to ban this stuff. Until then regular people need to know they can take care of their yards and gardens without these poisons.
