A Better Nursing Home
Trying To Make Nursing Home Living Better
A Compassionate Nursing Home Model
Managements of nursing homes are trying various methods to improve the livability of their facilities. One way is to advertise that they have special units catering to certain nationalities. On a Russian Unit they have staff that speaks the language and have activities that are familiar to them.
The residents who are able can be involved in deciding what trips they want to go on and what activities they want to be involved in. Having less rotation of staff is preferable because there is continuity. The residents can build up a trusting relationship if they are mostly dealing with someone who is familiar with their wants and needs.
Nursing homes can be very impersonal. The decor can look very institutional. In order to personalize things they have the residents give inputs on the decorating and other things in their surroundings. Be involved in what is cooked and how.
More privacy by having private rooms and bathrooms and a way to secure it from other people.
