My airtight wood burner (tho my next house will have a rocket mass heater as a back up to passive solar heat) I use no other heat in my home, except a small electric heater to warm the bathroom a few minutes before shower time. I am discovering I can cook all sorts of food on the top of my airtight, including bread! So I'm not using my stove and oven nearly as much as before. I'll be adding this lens to my new Sustainable Energy lens, it'll be published in a day or two.

Well u cant eliminate electricity from your life but you can where is counts in the home. Your electric clothes dryer is the biggest consumer of electricty in your home out of all your appliances that you may have. So, how do you turn it off forever? simple use a clothesline. Clothes will dry on a clothesline in almost any environment. Modern clotheslines, see http://www.qualityclotheslines.net are now designed to be discreet to blend in with the environment so as to not look ugly. They can dry more clothes on them then an electric model as well as dry them faster on good days.

So much common sense! Talking of which I was at the Dartmouth Regatta a few weeks ago Dartmouth UK. At the top of a lovely scenic hill by the Naval college their was a gym filled with people walking on treadmills! Why not walk up and down the hill, for free, no electricity required!
  • EelKat Sep 17, 2008 @ 11:29 pm | delete
your list of electric gadgets to do without... I don't own a single item on that list!
  • Help4You Aug 25, 2008 @ 10:50 pm | delete
My favorite energy saving gadget is timers on things that are likely to run way more than needed without a timer (ie. water heater). The other thing I look for is ways to save money on the electricity I have to purchase. There is an article about finding the lowest electricity rates that may help people.

Grean lens! My tip is to actually unplug, not just turn off appliances when not in use. Just being jacked into "the juice" draws a bit...especially for those who have power indicator LED's and the like. Happy Green!

Chuck, you could get a solar charger for your laptop computer which only uses about 25% of the energy of a desktop to begin with. This lens isn't really about extremes like your suggestion. It's about common sense, which unfortunately isn't too common.

Here's one. Take down this lens and stop using your power sucking computer. It has at a 500W power supply in it! The computer monitor draws another kilowatt!

My favourite planet-saving device is the egg timer in the shower. It really makes you aware of just how quickly time slips away when you're standing under the water. We're a very green house, with water tank, no plastic bags, solar panels on the way (can't wait :) and chooks. Anyways, great lens. Things like this WILL change the world, I believe it.

Okay let's stir up the pot & have a little fun shall we? Great ideas! We can all do our part. Let's use wisdom however. Love the quote "We got so excited that we could that we never stopped to ask if we should" Technology can save energy! Germany has little sensors that turn off Moving Stair Cases when no one is on them. Makes sense since airports leave them running all night. Not to mention other locations. What about office buildings. What would happen if we put those motion sensors in each room like we did in college? They would automatically turn off! Any one read Tesla? Guy powered city of CO. with magnetics of earth. Start there first. Now polluting our worlds landfills with all those mercury light bulbs. That make sense? Has any one checked to see if Al is a share holder? Science found the Sun & the ocean is the greatest culprit of CO2 emissions. How do we turn that deal off? But hey we can still do our part & we should. Let's just use wisdom! Hit the light off when you leave!

Food blenders actually create more washing-up!
I live in the West of Ireland where it's very windy and I wish I could trap all this extra wind and turn it into electricity (our national electricity supplier uses coal, peat, and more damaging resources, I wish they would invest more in developping energy from the sun, water and wind)

Nice lens full of useful information, 5 *****

It's still sad how much so many of us waste though, often without realizing it.

Remembering back to when I was young and the garbage was picked up by the "Dustbinmen", the bins were full mostly of dust - the ashes from the coal fire in the house, maybe the odd tin can or glass bottle, but everything else was used. The paper bags or newspapers to start the fire, no plastic bags or containers, and waste vegetables went onto the compost heap.

Now the bins are chock full of plastic bottles, glass containers, and cardboard boxes. It's criminal really.

Solar cookers. Just a dark aluminum pot on a metal wire stand in a roasting bag inside three sides of a box coated with aluminum foil, works on cold winter days in Central New York, should work most anywhere.

100 years ago(!), I was an avid reader of THE MOTHER EARTH NEWS, which focused on ways to live more simply. Then I got married, had children, and got immersed (mindlessly immersed) in LIFESTYLE. Your lens has re-inspired me to re-think a lot of how I now live. Deep down, I am more interested in LIFE-SUBSTANCE than lifestyle, but have not thought through how to take action.
I shall return here often to get new ideas on simplifying my life, and reducing my "foot print".
I found you site, because I am reviewing the top 25 sites to find principles related to creating a superior lens and website. I am finding that all the top lenses have superior CONTENT. I sort of already knew that, but for sure, your lens does have good content.

A lot of really great ideas. Stopped mowing my 2-1/2 acre yard a few years ago. Mow paths that the kids use as "roads" complete with traffic signs. The "islands" are planted with wildflowers. What the heck does anyone need with that much yard anyway?

Thanks for all the great information! I've been making one little change at a time for years now. One great resource I recently came across is Lehman's, a store that has supplied the Amish with electricity-free appliances for years. It's a bit spendy, but here's the link:

About 65% of the electricity is spent on water heating. Whenever possible take non-warm water bath as I do. Or plan a community solar water heater or just use two liters of water for a body scrub since that is the quantity mathematically required for total wetting of the body...

We lived 14 years without electricity. Built our home with our own hands. Sited it to get the best sun and shade. However, with bitter cold in the winter and 110 degrees in the summer, we opted to run electric to our home. We recycle water, plant trees wisely and do not waste electric.

I like to use non-electric tools in the kitchen because the noise of electric gadgets attracts my mother, and then she has a go at me for "using them wrong". Also non-electric tools are easier to clean.

cut flowers in the same place every year, I do not
    need a tiller.
