Non-Traditional Students - who are they?
Ranked #4,026 in Education, #92,429 overall
Nontrads are going back to school after a break.
Nontraditional students (or nontrads, as they are sometimes called) may or may not be parents. They may be married OR single. Their ages range from 19 to 99 and over.
They are simply people going back to school after a break. They might be going back to get their GED, trade school, online school, or college.
I myself went back to school after a break. There were a lot more non-traditional students there besides me. That surprised me!

Nontraditional students are going back to school after a break.... and they are hard workers too.
SOME ISSUES NONTRADS FACE
There are many issues that non-traditional students deal with on a daily basis. Here are some of them:
1. Children and families
2. Paying for school
3. Time and jobs, and
4. Study skills.
HOW SCHOOLS CAN HELP
Many schools have programs in place to help older students with these things.
The old adage that "you need to learn throughout your life" is never more true than today.
HOW FAMILIES CAN HELP
Some nontraditional students have supportive families that are there for them as they return to school. Some do not. Everyone, supportive families or not, can use as much support as they can get. That is where support groups and Nontrad groups come in.
SOCIAL NETWORKING - IT'S SUCH A GREAT THING!
Now older students or students going back to school after a break now have more opportunities to link up with other students like themselves.
This can help people achieve more success in school, because they have somebody to talk to and give them advice.

Something about groups...
Another way for nontrads to make connections is to join a Social Networking group online.
Nontrad Social Networking sites
Here are six fun groups Nontrads might like!
Please let me know of other fun sites for nontrads by commenting at the end of this Lens. Thank you!
- The Yahoo Nontrads group
- You can ask questions here, and also get great advice from other Nontraditional students. The links list is great too. I am the Moderator there.
- The Return to College Ning Group
- This group is for Moms and Working Adults Going Back to College.
Dads are also welcome here. This site is a forum for nontraditional students that migrated to Ning as its own group after starting at the TBD site. - The Nontrad Group on Facebook
- Join this group on Facebook for all nontraditional students. I share my links, ask questions, share tips and pages with all the members.
- The Toni Washington Bradley Nontraditional Student group on Facebook
- This group includes active members from across the country. You can ask your questions here, and learn from other members too.
- Returning to School - another Ning group
- This group is for adults returning to school or university 10, 20, 30 or more years later.
- TBD on Ning
- Recently, TBD (To Be Determined), an mature adult social networking site, announced that they were closing. So they decided to migrate here. You can find just about any subject here to discuss. It's got many different groups to join, too.
- Fab 40's and Beyond (another Ning group)
- "Life is a celebration and not a number!" This group features positivity and encouragement of its members.

- Am glad you put this up here. There seems to be some disability in many students today. Maybe in the past, we just did not have the means to assess. I was in a school here in Cambodia once and saw how many of the poor students have to bring their younger siblings to school as no one would care for them at home with the parents working in the farm. But these students just keep on. We are lucky we have so much help.

- I am a nontraditional student (in fact all 3 of my postgraduate degrees were nontraditional) and I teach nontraditional students. I know many nontrads are nervous when they go back to school about competing but usually they do better as they have better time management skills and know how to prioritize and work smart. They are also more motivated.

- I do know a lot of non-trad students and I commend them for wanting to further their studies - it's never too late after all. The TV show "Community" somewhat revolves around this theme. Great lens with lots of good info - ~blessed~
