Nordic Walking vs Regular walking
Nordic walking engages up to 90% of the body's muscles to provide a total body workout. It is one the fastest growing recreational activities and enjoying huge popularity amongst those that enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.
The main difference between Nordic walking and regular walking is that of the use of the Nordic walking poles which are very different from ski poles or trekking poles.
Nordic walking came out of a summer training method for Scandinavian cross country skiers. After undergoing development and testing it became known in its country of origin - Finland as "sauvakavely" or "pole walking". Elsewhere in the world it is referred to as Nordic Walking and now instructors and events have spread world-wide, with many local community groups joining the troupes.

Equipment you need
As far as Nordic walking goes there is much by way of equipment required - however it is very important to get the right equipment and ensure that it adjusted to suit your body and style. The most important piece of equipment is the Nordic walking pole. These are equipped with special Velcro straps to enclose the hand much like a finger-less glove. The uniqueness of the feature allows force to be applied without gripping the poles. It is also for this reason that trekking or ski poles are not suitable.There are a number of different models of Nordic walking poles. They range from being made of lightweight aluminum to carbon fiber and composites.
Apart from the poles themselves you'll also need a pair sturdy walking shoes, and most of all a sense of adventure!
