Norma Jean's Sun, True Story Memoir
Cincinnati, OH, December 2009: Available for immediate purchase; nationally distributed through Amazon.com. Miraculous tale of how a boy, born into unimaginable physical and emotional pain and destined to be a misfit, finds his way in a world of "others." Few could survive so many torturous years of surgical intervention and a ensuing lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol addiction and come out ahead. This moving tale reveals not only the struggle and heartrending elements of generational lives "gone wrong," but also the love and growth of a human being overcoming the odds and determined to find a way to live life to the fullest. Based on a true story, the author's unapologetic prose prompts enduring ethical questions and makes a gripping, personal read.
This newly edited release of Norma Jean's Sun will certainly exceed expectations. The story is not only convincingly true, but will rivet the reader with its genuine and unassuming pathos. Norma Jean's Sun is painfully reflective yet ultimately hopeful, a story told through the eyes of a boy who believes he has been mistakenly born into the world and a man who conquers physical and emotional injustice--and thrives. The reader will be challenged to answer the difficult questions of right and wrong as they may apply to his or her own life. It is clear that it is the hope of this author that the reader's conclusions will lead to a more fulfilled view of the "parallel beauty that lives just beneath the surface for us all."
An artist in spirit and gift, Kris Courtney has lived much of his life in the Midwest and currently resides and works in Oxford, Ohio. Surrounded by talent and gifted students of life, he is dedicated to service and volunteer work. A percentage of the earnings from Norma Jean's Sun book will go to research for Parkinson's disease and colon cancer in recognition of the illnesses that attacked his grandmother Flossie and his mother, Norma Jean.

Back in 1928 when a small town of Indiana collected its folks every year for a celebration at the local Fair, a gathering of strangers would join together to shape a new parallel of lives. This year was no different. Brought together by tragedy, two cousins would later embark on forbidden love to form a family of tales that drifted in all directions. Emerging from this tangled brood would be a soul that reached for greater heights, her name was Norma Jean. Chased as teenager girls are, Norma became the affection of a lad who watched from the other side of the tracks into a world he did not understand. Separated by war, they walked away with hope of another chance. From one end of the land to the tops of Nevada's highest mountains, these Misfits would stroll the Midways till dusty dusk's. As if played out on a screen of scripted illusion, escape into silence could not come too soon for some and yet others, left without notice.
Labor of Love...
Norma Jean's Sun, an artistic tribute
I would like to also say to perhaps my critics and shed light on what may be misunderstood. I am permanently disabled as perhaps some may have arrived in the book. I have no means of real funds and this literature is completely a labor of love.
This is an artistic, un-edited, self-supporting labor of love tribute that I hope provides inspiration.
I spell and talk like my Grandpa, JP. Once you read this, you may decide that is even more reason to criticize, I hope not. Either way, I do hope you're able to find the message that others are beginning to see and share through reading my Memoir. As I have noted, I hope I helped.
Described from a generation before to current, this author has scratched out a story from pain into a work of art. An artist in both paint and words, this true story captures the essence of a tragic life and the beauty that lies beneath the surface. His words paint a picture of a hardship and a suffering that only few could imagine.
This emotional story is an abstraction of language that parallels a life that just will not give up. Norma Jean's Sun is a story about differences and the tragedies that life presents a person who is visibly different from the rest.
Inside this Novel, you will ask yourself a host of questions that are difficult to understand. It is the hope of this author, your view allows your own life to gain a deeper understanding.
Be sure to check back often for updated content and images. My artistic expressions are drawn from personal experiences and memories that are reflected in this literature.
With a lifelong artistic curiosity, my work is created from memories or images that move me and allow freedom of spirit. What becomes of the result, is another entity all to itself. My hope is that the viewer can pause to enjoy the view.
Thank you for looking, Kris

5 Star Editorial Review - June 2009

Those simple words from Elton John's famous song, "Candle in the Wind", could easily apply to the lives of many people. To Kris Courtney, these words touched his own heart at a time when he mourned the death of his mother, Norma Jean. A beautiful woman in her youth, Norma Jean met the challenges of life with grace and dignity and perseverance. She did not give up when her first and only child was born severely crippled. She wept when the doctors put her newborn baby into a body cast in an attempt to straighten his spine and his limbs. Through the countless surgeries during his grow-up years to correct his hands, arms, legs, feet, Norma Jean would declare with great insistence: "Fight, Kris, fight." One defeat after another did not set her back until, in the end, the fight was her own, a battle against cancer that she could not beat.
Norma Jean's Sun is Kris Courtney's tribute to a mother that sacrificed everything for her severely crippled son. Courtney is an artist in both paint and words. In his touching memoir, he captures the essence of a tragic life and the beauty that lies beneath the surface. His words paint a picture of a hardship and a suffering that only few could imagine. Using a painter's brush, Courtney scratches out his emotional story in an abstraction of language that parallels a life that just will not give up. As his mother told him many times, this remarkably talented man continues to "Fight".
Norma Jean's Sun is a story about differences and the tragedies that life presents a person who is visibly different from the rest.
An Entrance to view...
Witness
A fall afternoon with the same breeze of moist leavesskirting across the yard that had once shown promise
of hope greeted me as I left for the airport. My task
was to arrive at deaths door. I beckon the belief that
most have when challenged to this degree and again
presented a facsimile of a 207 normal man. Except
this time, I would not return the same and all who saw knew the last moral fiber connecting me to a human existence was pull to its breaking point. The taxi ride from the Terminal was all so surreal and quiet. Asking in my mind for the car to drive past but inside expectantly afraid of what I will witness this time I enter the room. A room closely watched by Devil and God alike.
