As a young person growing up, I had an extremely high level of health. As that was my only experience I thought everyone did. I didn't realize it was because of my parents, their interest in wellness and what they provided for us.
What they provided was this: We lived on a few acres right on the outskirts of a large metropolitan city, San Francisco. Yet we had 27 fruit trees, a vineyard, a garden where we enjoyed fresh vegetables, and my dad raised a lot of our meat without antibiotics, growth hormones or any other chemicals..
What we didn't have; We did not have cokes, candy, lots of sugary desserts or junk foods. Don't worry I was not deprived.
Until I moved away and began to eat differently I took my great health for granted. I just didn't know any different.
After I got away from this wonderful lifestyle for awhile, my health changed and I developed low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Sometimes I passed out, I had difficulty thinking - brain fog. I was affected by extremes in temperatures, and I waited for the men in white coats to come and cart me off.
Then I decided to do something about it. I fought to learn about what I had taken for granted for so many years. I did get back on track and I'm so happy I did. It was well worth the effort. I have control of my mind and no longer wait for the men in white coats to come and take me away.
This material is designed to help you or those you love to have that vibrant level of health we all want. I hope you find the exact information here that you need.
You and those you love are worth the time and effort to read, study, apply and enjoy normal blood sugar.
Diabetes Statistics:
Here in the United States, the statistics are not only bad, they are increasing at an alarming rate.
Today many are afflicted with insulin resistance, hyperinsulinism, Type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes and syndrome X.Here's why we need to take action now.
Diabetes Statistics:
Total: 23.6 million children and adults -- 8.0% of the population -- have diabetes.
Diagnosed: 17.9 million people
Undiagnosed: 5.7 million people
Pre-diabetes: 57 million people
1.6 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years or older in 2007.
As was noted earlier, we have diabetes increasing at an alarming rate, and just look at the 57 million with pre-diabetes.
What are we going to do about it?
We need to make a change now.

The 5 Stages Of Diabetes
The Diabetic Pathway
Dr. Atkins is known for his Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution. But, he was much more than that. He was a cardiologist and family doctor with decades of clinical experience. He wrote many wonderful books on the nutritional impact on the body and certain conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. He has described 5 stages of diabetes and the damage it will do to blood vessels.
Stage 1--Insulin Resistance
Insulin's job is to escort the glucose into cells. The more a food raises your blood sugar, the more insulin is required. When cells resist insulin, glucose (sugar) levels increase in the blood. According to Dr. Atkins, insulin resistance is a consequence of a less than solid nutritional foundation lacking in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially magnesium, chromium, zinc, various trace minerals, and the B-complex vitamins. Without these vitamins and minerals the cells refuse insulin and the glucose load.
In most people candy, pop, cake, etc. will raise glucose and insulin to unhealthy levels, but in the "carbohydrate sensitive" person, even excess whole grains, legumes and starchy vegetables will push them over the limit.

can lead to for some genetic types of people.

Hyperinsulinism
In response to the elevated glucose levels, the blood stream is flooded with insulin. An overload of insulin forces some glucose into the nutritionally deficient cells. Elevated insulin can directly damage the artery walls.
Stage 3
There are now chronic symptoms of impaired blood sugar control, which include food cravings, fatigue, brain fog, moodiness and irritability. At this stage a 5-hour glucose tolerance test (GTT) may be used for diagnosing insulin resistance.
Type 2 Diabetes
Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome
In this stage, the blood sugar remains elevated throughout the day. It is recognizable diabetes when there is a 3-month history of fasting blood sugar ratings above 125 (A1c test).
Stage 5
In this stage the pancreas has stopped functioning and Type 2 diabetes is now similar to Type 1 diabetes. (In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas puts out too much insulin and then quits functioning. In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas puts out little or no insulin and is destroyed by the body).
Throughout each stage there is an increase in risk of blood vessel damage, sticky clot-prone blood, and the risk of heart attack. If there is a well-informed doctor and/or patient, especially in stage one, diabetes and coronary heart disease can be prevented.
Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome
According to Alan Watson in 21 Days to a Healthy Heart, "Syndrome X or metabolic syndrome starts in the liver where excess glucose is converted into triglycerides-a body-made fat. These tiny fat particles are packed into the same lipoproteins that carry cholesterol throughout the body. These elevated triglycerides are a direct consequence of eating excess carbs."
Can You Die from Diabetes?
Premature Death is One Conplication, there are Many Others
I don't want to be an alarmist but people are wondering. Yes, people with diabetes live about 15 years less than those without diabetes. Here's more information from BBC News:People with diabetes are more than twice as likely to die prematurely as those without the condition, research shows.
A study carried out for Diabetes UK tracked 700 people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
They found 123 died within five years, compared to 73 deaths among those without the disease.
The research showed the likelihood of premature death was increased across all age groups, but was most significant among people aged 40 to 59.
They went on to say:
The tragic thing is that so many of these deaths could have been avoided.
"Diabetes can lead to life-threatening complications like heart disease, kidney disease and stroke.

Other Complications of Diabetes
Wikipedia - on Diabetes
Diabetes and its treatments can cause many complications. Acute complications including hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis, or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma may occur if the disease is not adequately controlled.Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, retinal damage, which can lead to blindness, several types of nerve damage, and microvascular damage, which may cause erectile dysfunction and poor wound healing.
Poor healing of wounds, particularly of the feet, can lead to gangrene, and possibly to amputation. Adequate treatment of diabetes, as well as increased emphasis on blood pressure control and lifestyle factors such as not smoking and maintaining a healthy body weight, may improve the risk profile of most of the chronic complications. In the developed world, diabetes is the most significant cause of adult blindness in the non-elderly and the leading cause of non-traumatic amputation in adults, and diabetic nephropathy is the main illness requiring renal dialysis in the United States.[

The Solution: How to Normalize Blood Sugar Readings
OK you say, I get it. Now what do I do to avoid the dire consequences of high blood sugar readings including the 5 stages of diabetes?
1. The first thing we need to do is to eat whole, fresh and raw foods. By being raw and fresh they have fiber in them, which is also important. Another benefit of being raw is having live enzymes to help break down and properly use the foods we eat. That means to stay away from processed food and junk. Remember, you are what you eat!Processed is any change in food that is grown. Bread is processed; anything in a box is processed and also contains chemicals, sugar and non-foods. Avoid processed foods.
2. What causes diabetes? A steady diet of high glycemic foods cause diabetes. So, avoid high glycemic foods.
I realize this is the typical U. S. staple diet, but, look what it is doing to us. These foods will spike your blood sugar, and we don't need to spike our blood sugar. That's how someone becomes a type 2 diabetic or hypoglycemic in the first place.
For the most part eat like the example shows. If you want sweets be sensible. Don't eat sugar or artificial sweeteners.
How do I have something sweet then? There are real sweeteners that are low glycemic or no glycemic. Stevia is natural and is zero when it is processed properly. Sweet fiber is 0 on the glycemic index, xylitol is 7 or 8 on the index and lower
in calories than sugar, and erythritol is .02 on the glycemic index and practically no calories. So there are choices.
Do not go overboard on sweets, as you really cannot fool the body, but these will enable you to enjoy some desserts.

Step 3 is Eat at Regular times during the day.
Not just 3 times a day, but, 5 or 6 times a day
Eat at regular times during the day. Now I don't mean just 2 or 3 times per day. In order to regulate your blood sugar you need to eat small meals often. It may be 5 or 6 times a day.Repeat only eat small amounts. This is needed to even out your blood sugar levels. You may use your glucometer to decide if you need to eat every 2 or every 3 hours. Just check it to see how long you are in the proper range, and when it begins to come down. That varies from person to person.

Step 4 is to Have some Protein with each Meal
Make sure you have some protein at each meal. How much protein depends on your genetic type. Some people are protein types, and some are carbohydrate types.Protein picture by Google Free Images
The Next Step is to Eat Low Glycemic
Most whole raw foods are low glycemic
You need a copy of the Glycemic index, and only eat foods that are low glycemic.Low Glycemic!
These are the foods that lower blood sugar. This will help insure that you keep your blood sugar in the proper range.
Pictured: Image of low glycemic foods by Google Free Images
Step 6 is to Drink Plenty of Pure Water Daily
Cokes, Coffee, Sugar Laden Drinks do not count.
Drink plenty of pure water daily. I'm not talking about cokes, diet or otherwise, coffee or high acidic and sugared fruit juices or drinks. We are talking pure, clean, filtered water. It is important to properly hydrate the body, and rid it of toxins.
A properly hydrated body will have enough water to work and function properly.
The Last Step is Activity or Exercise
Now, a lifestyle includes more than what we eat or drink. When it comes to a healthy blood sugar a person needs to exercise or move regularly.Regular exercise is known to help blood sugar levels to become more balanced and stay in their proper range.
Be sure to warm up before and cool down and stretch out after exercise. If you are not used to exercise begin
slowly and then build up. Always be well hydrated. And check with your health care provider.
Exercise will help you normalize blood sugar, so if you are already diabetic be sure to monitor your
blood sugar so you can make your adjustments accordingly.

- I try to feed my family well, but I'll admit that I eat too many sweets. I had to rate myself a 7 on the opinion scale. I'm almost willing to make more changes and become more proactive about my health. I'm being honest! Your information is excellent and gives me a lot to think about. Thanks, Carmel!
