Normal Kennel Cough Symptoms

Kennel cough is an upper respiratory disease which is highly contagious.  Several kinds of viruses and bacteria can cause kennel cough.  The most common bacteria is Bordatella.

Kennel cough is usually transmitted in places where there are many animals together, such as kennels, dog shows and shelters.  Cats are also susceptible to kennel cough.  Other animals that can get the disease are guinea pigs, pigs and rabbits.

Since it is very contagious it is necessary to isolate the animal that has kennel cough symptoms and try to avoid the spread of the disease.  It spreads so rapidly that sometimes whole kennels have had to shut down to prevent the spread of this disease.

Normal Kennel Cough Symptoms

Normal kennel cough symptoms are usually seen anywhere from 2 days to 14 days after exposure. These symptoms start with a hacking cough which is very noticeable, as it is constant and the sound of the cough is as if the animal has something stuck in his throat. Many times after coughing bouts they will cough up light color mucous. Other symptoms are watery eyes and runny noses.

These normal kennel cough symptoms will usually last anywhere from 6 days to two weeks. Kennel cough is nothing to get alarmed about, and should be treated like a common cold.

There are a few things that you can do to make your pet comfortable:

1. Keep him warm, away from drafts

2. Give him plenty of water so he remains hydrated and so he pees a lot

3. Take his collar off so it won't irritate his neck

4. Give him honey for his throat

5. Give him wet food so the dry food won't irritate his throat

6. Refrain from a lot of activity, let them rest

Normal Kennel Cough Symptoms Can Turn Into Secondary Bacterial Infection

Normal kennel cough symptoms are nothing to worry about. Besides the cough and other signs, the animal usually maintains good spirits and a good appetite.

However, when the symptoms persist and turn into a secondary bacterial infection, this is dangerous.

Watch your animal. If the symptoms are still there after 3 weeks or if he starts coughing up dark color phlegm, this means that he has developed a secondary bacterial infection, and this can be fatal if not treated immediately. Also watch for signs of fever or listlessness. If any of this exists, go to a veterinarian right away.

How To Prevent Normal Kennel Cough Symptoms

Conventional medicine uses the Bordatella vaccine to prevent normal kennel cough symptoms. However, there is more and more evidence of the harmful side effects of this vaccine. Besides, sometimes it does not prevent the disease anyway, and may even cause to bring it on full blown.

So you might be stressing your pet's immune system for no reason. Besides, these vaccines often cause chronic inflammation, which is one of the leading causes of cancer in animals.

If your animal has the normal kennel cough symptoms there are a number of pet home remedies which can help him. There are also hundreds of natural pet home remedies to prevent kennel cough and build your animal's immune system.
