My Tribute to Norman Rockwell and His Works

Norman Percevel Rockwell (February 3, 1894 - November 8, 1978) is a very popular 20th century American illustrator and painter.    His well-liked works, still trendy to this day, provide a story in a picture which presents an ambiance to any room in which they are displayed.  Rockwell is most celebrated for the cover illustrations of everyday life in publications such as The Saturday Evening Post, Boy Scouts of America, and Boy's Life.  Among the best-known of Rockwell's publications are the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter (although his Rosie was reproduced less than others of the day), Saying Grace (1951), and the Four Freedoms series.  I know his works are some of the favorites for my wife and I.  I will give an overview, and tribute to him and his works in this lens.  This is a growing site, and you might want to bookmark this lens.  Hope you enjoy it!

In 1943, during the Second World War, Rockwell painted the Four Freedoms series ...  The above picture is entitled "Freedom of Speech."   The U.S. Treasury Department later promoted war bonds by exhibiting the originals in 16 cities. Rockwell himself considered "Freedom of Speech" to be the best of the four. (See Good Food, Many Blessings, and Norman Rockwell

(Note:  The reproductions in this lens are just illustrations of the originals as found on the web.  I will give credits throughout where more information about each can be found.  I believe that Rockwell is one of the greatest but underrated artist of the day

Rockwell was a careful craftsman with an ability to represent detail realistically. The subjects of most of his illustrations are taken from everyday family and small-town life and are often treated with a touch of humour. Though loved by the public, Rockwell's work was dismissed by most critics as lacking artistic merit and authentic social observation. In 1977 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom-the nation's highest peacetime award-by Pres. Gerald R. Ford.

I had a couple of million dollars' worth of... stock once. And now it's not worth much more than wallpaper. I guess I just wasn't born to be rich.

Norman Rockwell on drawing women!

I learned to draw everything except glamorous women. No matter how much I tried to make them look sexy, they always ended up looking silly... or like somebody's mother.

Norman Rockwell was very prolific.  His work included:

  • Over 4,000 original works:  Of these, many have been destroyed by fire, many are in permanent collections.
  • Illustrated over 40 books including Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
  • Illustrated for booklets, catalogs, posters (mainly movie promotions), sheet music, stamps, and playing cards.
  • Illustrated murals, including "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "God Bless the Hills," (1936 for the Nassau Inn in Princeton, New Jersey)
  • Rockwell's work was dismissed by serious art critics in his lifetime.  Many of his works appeared to the critics to be overly sweet, especially the Saturday Evening Post covers, which tended toward idealistic or sentimentalized portrayals of American life.

Norman Rockwell, A Most Underrated Artist!

I can take a lot of pats on the back. I love it when I get admiring letters from people. And, of course, I'd love it if the critics would notice me, too.
