Tribute to Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell and I never met. But his art inspired me and had a lot to do with me becoming an artist myself!

My parents had two Norman Rockwell art books in the house when I was growing up, and I loved to pore over all the illustrations when I was young - as I got older, I spent more time learning about the mechanics of his artwork - how he took several photographs or live models and materials and combined them in his paintings. How he adjusted it all to make it fit.

I liked finding out which of the children in his illustrations were his, and which ones were his neighbor's kids...all that fascinated me. Now I do some of that myself!
I also work from photographs, combining them to get the effect that I want. I think I developed a good sense of composition and balance in my art from looking at his exceptional paintings.

Norman Rockwell was not well respected during his own time. Many of the art elite considered him a sell-out as an artist. They said he was 'too commercial.' They probably also disrespected him for working from photographs instead of just from live sittings.

Short Biography of Norman P. Rockwell

Norman Perceival Rockwell was born on what had to be a cccold morning, February 3, 1894 in New York City.

He attended Chase Art School, the National Academy of Design, and Art Student's League.

He illustrated for Look Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post. From 1916 until 1963, Rockwell's paintings appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post magazine 332 times.

A little known fact is that he also did some acting, he was in Stagecoach in April of 1966.

He endured the loss of his studio due to fire (not only loss of art and supplies, but also of all his costumes and props that he collected over the years.

Norman Rockwell was married 3 times. First to Irene O'Connor (they married in 1916 but divorced in 1929.)
He married Mary Barstow (schoolteacher) in April of 1930, and they were married until her death in 1959.

Mary and Norman had 3 sons together : Jarvis, Thomas Rockwell (an author), and Peter. Norman married Molly Punderson (also a schoolteacher) in 1961, and they were married until his death from Emphysema on November 8, 1978. He was 84.

Rockwell wrote his memoir: 'My Adventures as an Illustrator' in 1960.

Norman Rockwell Behind the Lens

A beautiful book that shows the reference photographs Norman Rockwell used to create some of his best known works. Explains how he made the decisions in how he pieced together parts from separate photographs. A very unique and interesting book about Norman Rockwell and his art.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Norman Rockwell page. He's one of my art heroes, for sure. The page doesn't do him justice, but I enjoy honoring, remembering, and learning more about artists who have inspired me.
