Learn About Norse Mythology

Coming from a Norwegian-American family, I've always been fascinated by Norse Mythology. Nearly everything I've learned I had to read or watch in movies because my family is pretty far removed our Norwegian roots.

Norse Mythology

Norse Mythology: Info on Wikipedia

Norse mythology has its roots in Proto-Norse Iron Age Scandinavian prehistory. It flourished during the Viking Age and following the Christianization of Scandinavia during the High Middle Ages passed into Scandinavian folklore, some aspects surviving to the modern day.

The mythology from the Romanticist Viking revival came to be an influence on modern literature and popular culture.

What is a Saga?

Saga: Information on Wikipedia

The sagas (from Icelandic saga, plural sögur), are stories about ancient Scandinavian and Germanic history, about early Viking voyages, about migration to Iceland, and of feuds between Icelandic families. They were written in the Old Norse language, mainly in Iceland.

The texts are epic tales in prose, often with stanzas or whole poems in alliterative verse embedded in the text, of heroic deeds of days long gone, tales of worthy men, who were often Vikings, sometimes Pagan, sometimes Christian. The tales are usually realistic, except legendary sagas, sagas of saints, sagas of bishops and translated or recomposed romances. They are sometimes romanticised and fantastic, but always dealing with human beings one can understand.

Loki

The trickster God Loki was described as many things, one of which was a Sky Walker. Many resources on the Net point to George Lucas having originally used the name Starkiller when he created the character Anakin, and that the name Luke Skywalker was chosen after the first Star Wars movie started filming. Even though that is the only history of the name I found online, I wonder if there isn't a tie between "Loki the Sky Walker" and Luke Skywalker. After all, George Lucas has shared that he developed his stories using ideas of from mythology (The Hero's Journey).

Apology to fellow members that had signed the old guestbook. I got click happy when trying to move things around the lens and deleted the old guestbook. I wish there was a way to undo mistakes like that.
