Books on Rivers

The Mississippi is not only the greatest river in the United States, but has some of the country's most romantic and interesting cities located along its path. In its early history, flat-bottomed paddle steamers that could navigate the river's shallows were the major form of transport up the center of America, carrying people, produce, and all kinds of materials to inland settlements.

In recent years this hustling, bustling waterway has become quite an attraction, and the most popular form of tourist transportation along the Mississippi today is by replicas of yesteryear's paddle steamers -- large, gaudy, raucous, and fun rather than luxury.

There are three especially famous and recommended Mississippi steamers, The Delta Queen, The American Queen and the Mississippi Queen which offer a host of voyages ranging from 2-12 days and covering the American South. Cabins are large, comfortable and air-conditioned and the owners, rather than trying to make these trips exclusive, endeavor to make these voyages as much fun as possible, covering not only the Mississippi but also, on other voyages, the Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, Arkansas and Atchafalaya Rivers. Ports of call include New Orleans, Memphis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, St. Paul, Louisville, Nashville, Chattanooga, Little Rock, Tulsa and Galveston.

These ships are famous for their entertainment which includes New Orleans Dixieland contemporary jazz, Memphis Blues and St. Louis ragtime with cabarets, vaudeville-style floor shows and dancing to Big Band melodies. The cruise takes you to the gracious America of yesterday, with its big plantation houses and an atmosphere straight out of 'Gone With the Wind.'

Steamer on Hudson River

The Knik River is a 25-mile-long river in the U.S. state of Alaska. Its source is at Knik Glacier

A steamboat or steamship, sometimes called a steamer, is a ship in which the primary method of propulsion is steam power, typically driving propellers or paddlewheels. Steamships usually use the prefix designation SS, S.S. or S/S.

The term steamboat is usually used to refer to smaller steam-powered boats working on lakes and rivers, particularly riverboats; steamship generally refers to larger steam-powered ships, usually ocean-going, capable of carrying a (ship's) boat. The term steam wheeler is archaic and rarely used. In England, "steam packet", after its sailing predecessor, was the usual term; even "steam barge" could be used, especially in newspaper reports.R. Malster, "Wherries & Waterways", Lavenham, 1971, page 61. Steam engines were developed and adapted in the late 18th century for use on ships, but did not become widely used until the early 19th century. Growth in their use was rapid on United States rivers, and seaworthy steamships gradually replaced sailing ships for commercial shipping through the latter 19th century. During that period even the largest of steamships had auxiliary sails.Steam tonnage in Lloyd's Register exceeded sailing ships tonnage by 1865. The French transatlantic steamer "La Touraine" was probably the last of her type to be equipped with sails, although she never used them.

Steamships in turn were overtaken by diesel-driven ships in the second half of the 20th century. Most warships used steam propulsion from the 1860s until the advent of the gas turbine in the early 20th century.

Portraits of the Riverboats

Portraits of the Riverboats [Hardcover]

Portraits of the Riverboats [Hardcover]

Whether called a riverboat, paddleboat, sternwheeler, or showboat, the steamboat revolutionized river travel between 1810 and the Civil War. Greatly advancing commerce and travel, these floating mansions provided a romanticism and color which has long since disappeared. This superb volume describes a world in which every boy along the Mississippi yearned to become a river pilot, and every levee was crowded with goods waiting to be loaded onto steamboats, a world in which the elite of society rubbed shoulders with gamblers in the luxury of mighty river cruises.
