Taking pictures in low light can be a little bit tricky because they do tend to blur. In low light, it is imperative to keep your hands steady. You might consider placing your hands on a fixed object to ensure that they don't move. Ideally, a tripod would be best.

Digital cameras can suck up a lot of battery power, the LCD screen has a lot to do with this, make sure you have your batteries fully charged. Get a few sets of rechargeable batteries, and always take an extra set with you. You'll never miss a shot this way.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not a good idea to wear white for a photo. Modern cameras are equipped with auto-focus. When the camera tries to auto-focus it looks at all the different shades of color in the field. It is almost inevitable for white garments to appear washed out in pictures.

Get closer to your subject. Use the zoom feature of your camera, or get physically closer for the shot. You want the subject of the photo to completely fill the frame. A busy background, even a really interesting one, can focus the viewer's eye on it, rather than the subject. Details also become more visible and engaging when subjects are closer.
