North Atlantic Right Whales On The Move

It is that time of year when the Northern Right Whales begin to move just a little south of their normal feeding grounds to give birth to their babies. Typically they can be seen from Georgia to Florida in winter time from December through April.

These incredible aquatic creatures are endangered due to the popularity of their species with the whalers of the past. In the 2008-09 season there were about 200 right whales spotted off of the Georgia coast including 39 sets of mothers and their calves which was a record.

Let's travel together and find out more about the Northern Right Whale.

Northern Right Whales

are baleen whales

In the spring, summer, and fall North Atlantic Right Whales feed off the Canadian and northeast coastlines. From New York to Nova Scotia these mighty giants skim the waters with their mouths open. Their baleen plates filter the water and their prey in a magnificent manner. Naturally there needs to be enough prey to spark the right whales interest. The prey must be large enough for the baleen plates to filter it and small enough that it can not swim away.

Right whales have a bow-shaped lower jaw and a head that is up to one-quarter of the body length. Adult right whales may reach a weight of 60 tons and be almost 50 feet in length. Their calves will weigh approximately 1 ton at birth. These mighty giants have no dorsal fin and they breathe through two blowholes on the top of their heads. The right whales blowholes create a unique V-shaped blow, which also helps researchers identify the whales from a distance.

Commercial Harvest of North Atlantic Right Whales

Has Been Banned

Commercial whaling in the late 19th century almost drove Right Whales to extinction. In 1935 the commercial harvest of these gentle giants was banned. Today the North Atlantic right whale is classified as endangered under both United States and Georgia law. Georgia adopted the right whale as its state mammal in 1985.

Although not hunted now, right whales face survival problems ship strikes, entanglement in commercial fishing gear and habitat destruction. Even after nearly 50 years of protected status, there are only an estimated 300 to 400 North Atlantic right whales today.

We were very fortunate to see a Right Whale on a recent whale watching cruise. By law, the captain could not move any closer to the whale but while the boat was in neutral, we go to see a good view of this endangered animal as it crossed the wake behind the boat.

I have always loved whales, I guess that probably comes as no surprise. I could spend hours whale watching. They are such huge, graceful animals and they seem so serene and peaceful. I have very few things on my bucket list, but an Alaskan "day" whale watching cruise is one of them. I have talked about it for years. I have a tremendous fear of large boats or ships so I think a day trip would be all I would be able to handle. I am lensrolling this lens to all 18 of my animal lenses.
