Life with horses in the lower mainland of British Columbia

I find being around horses very therapeutic. No matter how grumpy or uncomfortable I am when I walk into the barn, within about twenty minutes there is a smile on my face.

The odd thing is that it doesn't matter much what I'm doing while I'm there. It could be cleaning a stall or petting the cat. There's just something about horses that triggers alpha brain waves. Weird!!

Northern Horse Silliness

Every fall when the first frost comes, riders break out the blankets and swaddle the poor things. I've never been able to figure out why. The horses certainly don't need it. Even an extreme northern horse like the Norwegian Fjord horse does fine without a blanket.

I'm convinced that one of the main reasons people blanket is to show how much they care about their horses. And there does seem to be a sort of status competition around who has the best, most expensive blanket.

A big reason why people blanket is supposedly to keep their equine friends from hairing up. In fact, though, studies have shown that the triggering factor for hair growth in the northern horse is not temperature, but the amount and intensity of light. If you want to keep your horse from hairing up, keep a 200 watt bulb burning in his stall for fourteen hours a day. This will keep him from hairing up much better than a blanket will.
