The Scarlett Room- Sponsor Pet Blog

Find out how your favorite sponsor pets are doing by reading their very own blog!!

The Scarlett Room is a new way for you to keep up with the exciting and heart warming stories of the Animal League's Sponsor pets.

Scarlett, a courageous mother cat who in 1996 fearlessly risked her life as she rescued her entire litter of kittens from a burning garage, is not only the Animal League's beloved symbol of courage and heart; she also symbolizes all the cats in our Sponsor Program who face various hurdles and challenges. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that come to us have been abused or neglected and others are injured or have chronic illnesses. To highlight these amazing pets who persevere in the face of adversity, the Scarlett Room was created.

Take the time to explore this fun and informative place where you can stay abreast of all the animals in the Sponsor Program - both cats and dogs - learn about their lives, their medical conditions, and perhaps share in their experiences.

Lets take a journey together into the Scarlett Room.

Corky was rescued from a dumpster....

My name is Corky. I'm a baby Cocker Spaniel, and if you can believe it, I was found trembling and whimpering in a dumpster that was filled with harmful construction debris like splintered wood, broken glass and rusty nails. Somebody thought I was garbage and threw me away. I don't know how anyone could mistake a little three month old puppy for trash. I guess they just didn't want me anymore and got rid of me.

Find out how Corky was saved and see this affectionate pup on video.

North Shore Animal League America Rescues over 100 Dogs From a Puppy Mill in West Virginia

Two North Shore Animal League America Emergency Rescue Teams returned from West Virginia with over 100 dogs, including pregnant mothers, mostly dachshunds, who were seized in Parkersburg, West Virginia from a commercial breeding operation know as a "puppy mill."

The emergency rescue team responded to a call for help from the Humane Society of Parkersburg after Wood County officials removed over a thousand dogs from an internet-based dog breeding business in the largest animal rescue operation in West Virginia history.

It is estimated that over 500,000 puppies sold every year in pet stores have come from the horrific conditions of puppy mills. Please, don't buy that puppy in the window... adopt today!

Find out about the Federal Puppy Mill Bill which will help stop animal abuse and neglect at puppy mills.

Celebrities Work Together To Expose Puppy Mills

Jana Kohl and Baby shed light on the terrible existence of puppy mills with the help of celebrities

The never-ending cycle of puppy mills is horrendous and wrong. As long as people buy their pets from pet stores, helpless breeding dogs will continue to live in terribly small cages without ever seeing the light of day or feeling the love of the human touch. They are treated as disposable items, sometimes resulting in injury and death due to inhumane conditions and treatment. By adopting from a shelter and refusing to buy from a pet store you will become a partner in the fight against puppy mills.

Watch the Video of Jana and Baby helping North Shore Animal League America bring awareness to puppy mills.

Buy Jana Kohl and Baby's Book: A Rare Breed of Love today! Share it with all those you know to help expose the truth of puppy mills and help encourage animal rescue and adoption.

Baby's story has even inspired the fight to inact "Baby's Bill", a Federal Puppy Mill Bill, which will help stop animal abuse and neglect at puppy mills.

Swiss was almost put to death....

A couple of months ago, little Swiss was tied to a pole and left to die. Someone didn't care what happened to him. There is no way to know for sure how long Swiss was left there without food or water before he found himself in a local city shelter. But Swiss was far from saved; the shelter had to put him in quarantine for six months. When Swiss was found he had awful bites all over his face and body and it was impossible to tell if the dogs that bit him were rabies vaccinated or not. The law requires that Swiss either be tested for rabies or held in quarantine for six months - and the city shelter didn't have the time or space to keep him for that long. Sadly, Swiss would have to be euthanized to test for rabies.

Find out how Swiss was saved from certain death.

Willie came to the Animal League with a severe respiratory infection and poor eyes. Actually, the globe in his left eye ruptured and needed to be removed. That's why he has to wear an e-collar around his neck to prevent him from irritating or rubbing his eye socket.

Sardine & Lobster need a home!

What an adorable pair of kitties that will warm any home.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Hey there ladies and gents. Yep that's right, we are those cute, cuddly little ladies named Sardine and Lobster. As if our names weren't adorable enough have you seen our faces?!

For some reason we've been unable to find the right home and have been living at the Animal League since May, 2007. Our previous parents were moving and couldn't take us with them so they left us with friends at the Animal League. Although we were very scared at first we've come to appreciate the love and care we receive. However, we would really love to find a family to call our very own. A home where we could run around, play, be loved and show affection with our soothing purrs! We would do best in a home without young children, but other kitty friends would be just fine. Do you have a place in your heart for us?

If you are interested in adopting Sardine and Lobster, contact dorits@nsalamerica.org

A Wonderful Update on Spikey!

Helping provide a happy life for all animals is what makes the work of the Animal League so meaningful.

While the Animal League treasures every animal that comes through their doors, there are always some pets that find an extra special place in their hearts. Spikey was one of those pets. The Animal League adored this beautiful, shy and loving pup since he arrived and dedicated themselves to finding him a loving home to spend the rest of his life. They knew it would be difficult because Spikey was such a young pup, but already had a life-threatening heart murmur that would shorten his life drastically. But their dedication to providing him the life he deserved was unwavering. You can only imagine the joy that each of the employees and volunteers felt when one special animal lover came along to provide Spikey with a loving family. It is a story like this that makes the hard work of the Animal League worthwhile.

The Famous Dog Day at Shea Has Come to a Close!!!

Someone definitely let the dogs out as the NY Mets hosted North Shore Animal League America's final Dog Day at Shea on Friday, September 5th, 2008. Wonderfully behaved dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds were adorned in their best Mets attire as they proudly paraded around the warning track.

While the Mets may have lost the game to the Philadelphia Phillies the day turned out to be a barking success as a sold-out picnic area was home to hundreds of excited Met fans and their four-legged friends.

Angel's Fight to Survive and the Saviors That Helped Her

One dog's struggle to live captures the hearts of us all

Meet Angel, a female Terrier-mix between one and two years old. Weighing only 24 lbs, this precious dog was barely hanging on. Having been without food or water for weeks, left alone in the harsh days and nights of winter and wandering the streets never knowing the love and warmth of a family and home, Angel truly needed help. North Shore Animal League America was lucky enough to receive a call - a call that brought Angel into their lives. Having been starved to the point of death and suffering from a terrible skin condition causing an infection all over her already frail body, another shelter knew that the League would be the only place Angel could receive the care she needed to recover.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how they treat their animals."

Give These Patient Pets A Wonderful Home!

North Shore Animal League America adopts out over 20,000 animals each year. Now that is quite an accomplishment. However, there are a few long-term residents that have been at the League, having not yet found the special caring owner that will provide them with the loving, wonderful home they long for and deserve.

At the League Friskies Cat Habitat - constructed by Purina in 2004 - cats that have been in their care for over 30 days are able to roam cage-free. That's because this facility was designed with the help of a well-known cat behaviorist. While this environment provides its feline residents with the ability to roam freely, play, and socialize with the other pussycat residents 24 hours a day, it does take them out of sight from the many adopters that can bring them home.

Read about some of the long-term cats in the League's care that would love to be adopted into a home of their very own. And the best part is, the adoption fees for cats in the Habitat are waived!

But wait! There are some special dogs that would love homes too. The League always takes the time to work with dogs with special behavioral needs and those that have been in their care for longer periods of time. That's why they created the Buddy Program.

This program assigns associates and managers to canine buddies to help the dogs on various issues such as housebreaking, socializing, and manners or even just to give them extra exercise, and try to bond emotionally with each and every one of them.

Meet the lovely dogs in the Buddy Program and take one home today!

Update on Star!!

Find out how this special cat is doing in her new home.

Star was a long-term resident at North Shore Animal League America. For more than a year, Star called the League her home. While the staff adored this special girl, they knew that she longed for and deserved a family of her very own. You can only imagine the excitement of the staff when one special adopter came to make Star's dream a reality.

Dog of the Month

Recently, North Shore Animal League America had the pleasure of meeting a warm and loving dog named Pippin. Pippin is a beautiful five-year-old female American Pit Bull Terrier mix, and though her face looks happy, her heart is not.

Sadly, Pippin's loving owner had passed away. Without understanding what was happening or why, Pippin found herself upheaved from her every day happy life of long walks, daily kisses and familiar surroundings. Life as she knew it had changed. Without rhyme or reason, Pippin was in a strange place, and her loving master was nowhere in sight. Pippin was in a municipal kill-shelter, alone and frightened and void of a certain future. But that all changed when North Shore Animal League America brought her through their doors. At five-years-old, Pippin is still very active. She loves to go for walks and run around in the park. Though she's not wild about cats, she does get along well with other dogs, but prefers to make the decision of which dog, on her own.
Won't you come down to the Animal League to meet Pippin? She's waiting for you so come on down to the Animal League today and get charmed!

Are you interested in adopting Pippin?

When we bring an animal into our home they not only become our pet, they become our family. You can memorialize a loved one with a brick dedicated with a special message.

Will North Shore be visiting your town? Check out their schedule.

North Shore Animal League America has multiple mobile adoption units that travel all over the tri-state area. These same units are used to help in large rescue efforts; these were deployed to aid after Hurricane Katrina and more recently to help during a puppy mill rescue mission in Virginia.

North Shore Animal League's Special Second Chance!

Each month a special-needs animal story will be featured to let you all know about the wonderful work NSALA does and the special pets in their care that need a home.

Dierk is a young German Shepherd mix. He is a big boy, but truly a gentle giant. Loving and silly, he is just a great big playful puppy at heart. He loves to go for walks and loves affection even more. It is so much fun to take his sweet face into your hands and cover it with kisses, and he is so receptive to all of it. Dierk especially likes to sit next to someone he cares about as they rub his ears and under his chin! Those are his sweet spots.

As most large breed dogs experience at some point, Dierk is having trouble with his hips. He is still being examined by specialists to determine whether or not he requires hip surgery, so a full prognosis is not available at this time. What Dierk needs most right now is a loving foster home with a loving family who can spoil him with hugs and make a safe and hip-friendly environment for him. He gets along very well with other dogs, so don't let a family pet stop you from taking this wonderful dog home. He is just a doll.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Dierk, please contact Jeni at jenir@nsalamerica.org

Volunteer at North Shore Animal League America

North Shore Animal League America simply could not survive without the help of dedicated, caring animal lovers just like you who generously volunteer at the League each week. From bottle-feeding motherless kittens to offering foster care to special needs animals, volunteers improve the quality of life for the tens of thousands of homeless pets that are sheltered at the League every year.

All it takes to start is:

  1. an application
  2. an interview
  3. some basic orientation classes
  4. and a weekly commitment

Apply online or visit the office at 16 Lewyt Street, Port Washington, New York. The Volunteer Office is open Monday Friday from 10AM 4PM and Saturday from 9AM 3PM.

Ways to Volunteer:
Adoption Center: Dog walking, socialization, feeding, cleaning, grooming, rescue, basic health care, training and obedience, adoption counseling, mobile adoption assistant, answering telephones.

Medical Center: Dog walking, socialization, vet tech aide, administrative assistant

Foster Care Parenting: NSAL America does not believe in killing animals. Therefore, there is always a group of special animals who need the kind of individual care that can be difficult to provide in a shelter environment. Possibly you can help. All animals placed in foster care continue to receive the full range of services from the League. Foster care is the humane alternative to extended stays for the special needs animals at the League.

Humane Education: Give tours, visit schools, create educational materials, etc.

The History of North Shore Animal League America

The story of how a garage harboring dogs and cats grew into a life-saving organization helping over 1 million animals to date!

In 1944, a few animal lovers in Port Washington, New York got together and formed the North Shore Animal League. Their work was a modest effort at first, with the shelter being simply a garage. But the dedicated group worked hard to improve and soon a few fenced outdoor runs were built. A bit of money trickled in to feed and care for the stray animals.

Elisabeth Lewyt, one animal lover who heard about the League, decided she wanted to learn more. She couldn't believe this unusual shelter never destroyed animals. So in 1969 she attended their next meeting with her husband, Alexander M. Lewyt.

Click on the lovely photos to read more about how NSALA came to be.

Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center

Each week over 150 animals are hospitalized and over 200 outpatients are seen for examinations and treatment . In addition, 27,000 vaccinations are administered annually to keep former residents happy and healthy. Meet the vets.
