My Opinion Of The Novel Nothing To Lose

In this 12th Lee Child novel, Nothing to Lose, Jack Reacher was in the middle of a journey from extreme NE Maine to extreme SW California when he stopped in Hope, Colorado. He was making a diagonal journey.

In the beginning, I was loving it.

By the last paragraph, I had mixed emotions--love & hate.

Again I found Reacher in a situation of his own making. He could have moved on. He didn't. But isn't this what we love about immovable Reacher? Sometimes. But not in this book.

As usual, the characters Reacher incounters in this novel are fascinating. Even if the book is lacking in plot believability, the characterizations are superb.

The ending of this novel was not satisfying to me. I was not comfortable with our Reacher acting as God. I won't reveal what he did, but what he caused to happen, did not settle well with me. It could have been handled differently. If you disagree, please respond.

The best thing about the novel (for Me) is that it is set in Colorado. Descriptions are right on. For example, as Reacher is travelling east from the town of Despair to Hope, he sees "...the dawn waiting to happen up ahead." on page 176. (I have seen this!) The small town of Hope is the dawn; however, the day will keep moving to Dispair.

It was worth the time.

A new Reacher Novel will be out in 2009!

DUMC says:

We all need a little HOPE. It was an ok read.

c.J. says:

did not like this last escapade of Jack Reacher. Lee Child seemed bored, and just threw words out. ALL of the other books we have LOVED. Sorry

Mickie_G says:

Not the best of Reacher. Still worth the time, tho!

I have included my favorite scene in Nothing to Lose. Please add yours to the list--but do not be a spoiler!

"Was it Worth It?" page 272

Reacher unbuttoned his shirt and slipped it off. Vaughan ..touched the ridged skin, very gently. Her fingertips were cool and smooth. They burned him, like electricity.
"What was it?" she asked.
"A truck bomb in Beirut."
"Shrapnel?"
"Part of a man who was standing closer."
"That's awful."
"For him. Not for me.. Metal might have killed me."
"Was it worth it?"
Reacher said, "No. Of course not. It hasn't been worth it for a long time."
How long a time?"
"Since 1945."1 point
