There is lots to discover on a trip to Nottingham. Crammed full of history Nottingham is also known as the Queen of the midlands. Famous for great shops, great bars and restaurants and of course pretty girls. People say there are six girls to every guy in Nottingham.
There are plenty of things to do in Nottingham. Nottingham lies to the east of junctions 25 and 26 of the M1 motorway. I moved to Nottingham in the 1960s when I was five years old. My father had a new job and the family upped sticks from Carlisle in Cumbria.
In those days Nottingham was famous for its 'trolley buses' which used over head power lines to drive buses. Modern trams can now be seen in the city. My first night in Nottingham was spent in the Midland Hotel. That was when Nottingham had two main stations and the hotel was right next door to the Midland or Carrington Street Station which was closed and built over when the shopping mall the Victoria Centre was constructed.
Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have several claims to fame, the most of course being Robin Hood. Others that might suprise you are that Jesse Boot of the retail pharmacist Boots the Chemist started his business in Nottingham, William Booth founder of the Salvation Army in the city too. Some famouse Brands also began their life in Nottingham, including Players Cigarettes and Raleigh Bikes.
Nottingham has been home to John Neville the actor of Baron Munchhausen film fame. He was the first artistic director of the Nottingham Playhouse and my claim to fame is that I was at school with his twin daughters. Nottingham is the home of writer Alan Sillitoe the author of the books 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' and 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner'. Other famous people include D.H. Lawrence who was a graduate of Nottingham University, and the first female head of the UK spy organisation MI5 Stella Rimmington who went to the Nottingham High School as did British entertainer Leslie Crowther.
Nottingham has Britains oldest pub, Ye Olde Trip To Jersualem and was the place where King Charles the First raised his standard on the 22nd August 1642 in the early months of the first English Civil War. Another historic 'must see' is the Goose Fair. This 900 year old event is still a vibrant occasion today.
