Novel Writing Months: Write a Novel in a Month

Ranked #366 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #17,739 overall

NaNoWriMo Isn't Your Only Option To Write Really Fast

Novel writing months are designed to help you get some serious writing done by forcing you to write most (or all) of you novel in a month.

It all started with NaNoWrimo (National Novel Writing Month), a writing challenge that tasks writers with creating a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. This breaks down to writing at least 1,667 words a day. This is a great way to really get your writing juices flowing. The idea is to not worry whether or not every word, sentence, paragraph and page are perfect, but instead just get them out there. In addition, Nanowrimo also helps the budding writer by hosting forums that provide the emotional support and social networking that is so often lacking in the solitary writer's pursuit.

But what if you can't wait for November? Well, you're in luck! Although the NaNo forums are active year-round, there are plenty of other sites that you can visit for more immediate motivation. In fact, every month of the year provides at least one forum for insane levels of daily writing.

So what are you waiting for? If you ever wanted to write a book, this is your chance!

January Novel Writing Month

Connect Without Having to Brave the Cold

january-novel-writeJaNoWriMo: January's the perfect time to cozy up with your computer and write a novel in a month, what with the general cold and yuckiness outside. Let the weather be your inspiration for a contemplative story, or fight the winter blues with a fiery romance. And let connecting with others doing the same thing lift you out of the seasonal doldrums.

February Novel Writing Month

Love and Inspiration Are In the Air!

February Novel WritingFebNoWriMo: February might be a short month, but that's no reason not to write a novel! Depending on how you feel about Valentine's day, this is the perfect month to write a love story... or a horror tale. Luckily, spending hours in front of your computer doesn't mean you have to slack off on networking with other writers!

March Novel Writing Month

Editing Your Novel Brings You One Step Closer to Publication!

MarNoWriMo: If March is the month that you finally decide to write 50,000 words, then check out the March Novel Writing Month forums.

NaNoEdMo: Okay, so it's not technically a novel writing month. But you need to dedicate some time to editing all those novels you've written in the previous year, right? Editing a novel can be as hard as or harder than writing it, so use the NaNoEdMo writers' community to keep your spirits high.

April Novel Writing Months

Write a Novel, or Write a Script

You have two choices for writing a complete novel during the month of april: April Fools, and
April Fools Novels. Don't let the foolish nature of the names fool you; writing a novel in a month is serious business! A mystery story might suit this month, or perhaps something about humor and hijiinks.

Although not strictly a novel writing month, Script Frenzy is another great avenue for writers (of scripts, that is) to write a lot in a month. For you novel writers out there, consider it as cross training. You might even discover a new love!

May Novel Writing Month

Let Spring Champion Your Writer's Challenge!

Writing in MayMayNoWriMo: Spring is (hopefully) in the air, and you surely want to get out and enjoy some decent weather! Why not take your laptop or pencil and paper along with you, and see what kind of inspiration sprouts? The energy of this month can bring out a story of joy, or perhaps an action thriller. Either way, figuring out how to write a novel before summer even begins is quite an accomplishment.

June Novel Writing Months

Networking and Noveling. What a Beautiful Match!

From the people who brought you NaNoWriMo now comes Camp NaNoWriMo! This summer-themed novel month occurs in June, and again in August. Thanks for the heads up, Claritastic!

I won't write out the meaning of the acronym WriDaNoJu here, but let's just say it's for writers who really, really want to get their novels done in a month. And why not? Summer is on the horizon, and beautiful weather makes it hard to focus on writing.

Another option is JuneNoWriMo.

Kiwi Writers bills itself as "NaNoWriMo for the southern hemisphere." No matter where you are in the world, you can still write a novel in a month!

July Novel Writing Month

Meet Some Writers, Write Some Words, Eat Some Hot Dogs.

Writing in JulyThe well-established JulNoWriMo is seen by many as the summer counterpart to the official NaNoWriMo in November. Perhaps you write better in the summer; perhaps you're in a mood to accomplish things now that the frigid days of winter are a distant memory; or perhaps you just have more free time. Whatever the case, block out some time in July to write that novel you've always been dreaming about!

August Novel Writing Months

The Year Is Half Done. Have You Written Your Novel Yet?

Missed Camp NaNoWriMo in June? Lucky you, you get another shot to go to camp in August! Best of all for bug-haters, you don't actually go anywhere during this camp. You get to do it from the comfort of your own home.

Summer is winding down, and what better way to celebrate the end of the season than with a freshly minted novel? Participating in AugNoWriMo will allow you to do just that. The sleepy days of August are the perfect time to write that thoughtful memoir or epic space opera.

But what's this? Another AugNoWriMo? Why not check out both?

September Novel Writing Month

Cooler Weather Makes Social Networking Even More Attractive!

In many places, the weather is starting to cool, and people are going back to school. Use that newfound academic energy (or the fact that the kids are finally out of the house) to join in on SeptNoWriMo and pound out an intellectual nonfiction or literary fiction book.

October Novel Writing Months

Halloween Might Be Scary, But Writing 50,000 Words Really Isn't!

Writing in OctoberThere's a definite chill in the air. Time to sit down, check out OctNoWriMo, and cozy up to your computer again for another novel in a month. You could try your hand at a detective or crime novel with a spooky or supernatural twist, or come up with some great new ideas for speculative fiction. Anything is possible.

There's also GothNoWriMo, for those of you interested in writing specifically Gothic fiction.

November Novel Writing Month

This Is Where Writing Fast All Began.

National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo, is the group that started the whole "writing a novel in a month" concept. If it's your first time writing a novel in a month, this is a great place to start. The site allows you to befriend other writers, motivate yourself and others with forums and competitions, and keep track of your progress with neat statistics and graphs.

December Novel Writing Month

Finish Those Novels! And Start Planning For Next Year!

Don't let your momentum die out after November. Perhaps you didn't quite make the 50,000 word goal; maybe you did, but your novel still has a ways to go. You could even have finished the whole rough draft, but you know that it still needs a lot of work. Take advantage of NaNoFiMo (National Novel Finishing Month) to tie up all the loose ends. And then celebrate a terrific year of writing, with another one in store just around the corner!

National Novel Publishing Year

Take Your NaNoWriMo Novel To New Heights!

If you wrote a novel during any one of the National Novel Writing Months (or anytime, really), and you're looking to do more with it than let it sit and rot on your hard drive/in your notebook/on the stone tablet you chiseled it on, then you should check out NaNoPubYe, aka National Novel Publishing year. This is a site dedicated to helping you finish, edit, and submit your novel for publication.

What Do You Think?

Would You Write a Novel in a Month?

Loading

Definitely! It sounds like a fun challenge!

xisniel says:

I think this is one of the best ways to write or attempt to write a novel. It doesn't have to take years to be special.

missraine says:

Seems like something exciting to try:)

linhah says:

I'm girding myself up for it.

NutmegAngel says:

I have done--done Nanowrimo four years running. Looking to do it in another month too.

pumpnut says:

I would be willing to give it a shot. Heck, even if I didn't get 50,000 words down I would be that much closer to a goal.

I'm not sure if I'm up for it... yet. Maybe someday.

bolillie says:

I'm not a fiction writer so I doubt I will do it. But if I was I'd participate at least once.

Ladymermaid says:

My brain is a little slow so I think a novel a month might be a bit of a stretch for me...a novel a year maybe?

tembrooke says:

I keep wanting to try it but it's a little intimidating. That's a LOT of words every day!

LabKitty says:

I couldn't TYPE 50,000 words in a month. Emma - you say you won the previous Nanowrimo? That's astonishing.

LoKackl says:

Can't imagine! Though I am impressed by anyone who succeeds in writing that many words in a month!

I've participated in NaNoWriMo for 5 years. Now I'm trying out Camp NaNoWriMo this June. There is also a camp for August. Maybe you can mention that in your lens.

I could could probably write a novel in one month, but not guarantees on how good it would be. Maybe a first draft?
  • emmalarkins May 6, 2012 @ 3:53 pm | delete
Exactly, a first draft! Sure, if you continue to write novels, you might spend longer on the first drafts in the future, but there's something powerful about getting your first one done in that amount of time.

And here I was thinking the only time to write a novel was NanoWriMo... Nice lens!
