Almost every woman loves handbags.  From the time we're old enough to walk we're looking for that perfect bag.  In grade school I used to carry a cute drawstring bag that used to belong to my grandmother.  It held my most prized possesion, my jacks and ball!  Then came the Choo Choo bag.  They looked like miniature train/cosmetic cases that came in lots of  metallic colors.  You just weren't 'in' if you didn't have one.  Oh, and you can't forget the mod sixties vinyl bags in bright orange or green.  After that came the suede long fringed hippie purses.  On and on the styles change as often as the years.  Okay, you've probably guessed my age by now, ha.  Each era or decade has their own special signature fad. 

So when it comes to choosing that special bag what do you look for?  The answer can get a bit complicated.  Do you want trendy? high fashion? practical? whimsical? novel?  Do you need it for work? evening? beach? travel?  Of course, the best scenario is to get one of each!

If you are a person on the go a shoulder bag would be your best choice.  This bag not only allows you to move about hands-free but you can stuff it full since your shoulder will be carrying all the weight.  Choose a bag with adjustable straps so you can carry it by hand if you prefer.  But never allow the bag to hang down below your waist.  Even though you are carrying a shoulder bag you still want to look stylish.

For those that prefer the more classic look choose a handheld bag.  These type of purses can be a lot of fun as they can come in a variety of handles from leather to bamboo.   If you are always in a hurry choose a bag with a magnetic snap.  They snap shut fast as the magnets always find each other with no effort on your part.  For those who are a bit clutsy a zipper top is your best bet.  No matter how you grab your bag nothing will fall out.  A handheld bag is usually preferred by business women as they seem to feel they look more professional swinging a bag.  Personally, I think they are just imitating the men and their briefcases, ha.

A clutch bag is more suited to evening wear.  They bring about an air of elegance and sophistication.  Usually, they have a clasp closure but a zipper top can be just as elegant.  In a clutch bag it's all about the shape and material.  Sequins and beads are usually the preferred choice.

You can't forget the most important bag of all - the tote bag!   Shopping is our middle name and the tote is the perfect accessory.  Usually, a tote is made of durable canvas with lots of pockets to stuff full.  Although most totes have no closure some do zip on top.  A tote bag can be whimsical and fun.  They come in lots and lots of materials including cartoon and TV characters.  They also make the perfect beach or travel bag.

What about color?  The basic rule of thumb is to choose a plain color purse to wear with a print outfit and vice versa.  The basic black or tan will go with most anything.  And forget the old rule of the purse matching the shoes.  You can match your purse to your jewelry color, your outfit or even your hair accessories.  Of course, you can still match your shoes if you must, ha.

The bottom line is find a bag you will have fun carrying.  Make sure it has lots of pockets for stuffing, is comfortable to carry, and will be the envy of all your friends.  And remember, you can always buy another one, and another one and another one!
