Nowell Sing We Clear
A Pageant of Midwinter Carols
Nowell Sing We Clear is a concert of traditional English carols and seasonal songs started in 1975 by English ex-patriates John Roberts and Tony Barrand and American musicians Fred Breunig and Steve Woodruff. Roberts and Barrand, who met as students at Cornell University in the late 1960s had been performing English folk music for several years, exploring the rich tradition of music found in villages and towns all over old England. As musicians in New England interested in contra dance and English country dance music, Breunig and Woodruff were able to blend their knowledge and music with traditions that are at the root of much music in the Northeastern part of the United States.
The only change in the lineup occurred in 1986, when Woodruff moved to California. Andy Davis joined the group and has been performing with Nowell Sing We Clear since then.

From Old England to New England
...and beyond
John Roberts and Tony Barrand, who developed their interest in English traditional music after they'd come to the United States, began performing sea songs, tavern songs and songs of the working folk. When they came up with the concept of Nowell Sing We Clear, they found a rich heritage of material to draw on. Even after performing the show for more than 30 years, they are still uncovering "new" material to use.
In the course of a performance, audiences will not only hear traditional songs and tune, they will also learn their origins and of the customs such as visiting, feasting, wassailing, caroling, gift-giving and wrenning. The performance also includes a Mummer's play from Kentucky, a form of folk drama with deep roots in both England and North America. All of this is presented in a lively, entertaining and often humorous manner.
Nowell Sing We Clear has itself become a holiday tradition for many people in the Northeast. For several years during the 1980s, one of the stops Roberts, Barrand, Breunig and Woodruff made was at the Northern Lights Coffeehouse at the First Parish Church in Fitchburg, MA where I served as emcee. The performances were held in the church sanctuary. My stage duties on those nights was only to welcome the audience and the performers, then I'd enjoy a warm and magical evening with everyone else. Coming from English and Scottish roots, Nowell Sing We Clear brought me in touch with my heritage and the spirit of the season.

Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Nowell Sing We Clear
Released in 2008
When The Best of Nowell Sing We Clear was released, some of the songs from the 1975-1986 period were not included. Among those was "Green Grow the Rushes-O." This omission distressed a Philadelphia radio host so much that John Roberts made him a CD single so he could play it on his show. This led to taking another look at omitted material and the addition of songs from the past few years. This album is currently available at Golden Hind Music. Click on the CD cover to order.

- So much of the music we performed at our local "Solstice Extravaganza" came from this repertoire and from christmas revels. This lens brings back happy memories. Thanks.

- Growing up in Brattleboro, VT during the 1970's, my parents took us to see Nowell Sing We Clear at the West Village Meeting House. We loved it! It quickly became an annual tradition, kicking off our family holiday season. I still remember my youngest brother stomping the floor in his toddler Sorels to "The Derby Ram", calling the concert "Hey Ringle-Dangle" even to this day. So glad they are still performing!

- I've fixed the link to the performance schedule which had been giving a 404 error. It now goes to the schedule for December 2010. NSWC is in its 36th year! It's nice to remember seeing it live back in Massachusetts in the mid-'80s.
