Great tips for Non-profit fundraising

Helpful tips and tricks for non-profit fundraising.  Bits of advice and lessons learned from an old fundraiser.  Perfect for the grant writer, fundraiser, or charity drive worker.  These tips can also be applied to personal fundraising (for marathons or triathalons).

Top Tips for Non-Profit Fundraising

I've been a grant writer and a fundraiser for a few years, and here are some of the best tips I've picked up on the way.

1. Ask

You have to ask to receive. Don't be afraid or intimidated to ask for money. No one donates without someone asking, so ask! The worst thing they can say is no. Ask for a specific amount based on your need - the person may give less but give them an idea of where you're at and what you're trying to fund (i.e. We need $10,000 to start a community garden).

Always remember, you're asking for money to run valuable programs, not for yourself. This makes it easier to ask.

2. Be Creative

Asking in a letter or in person is wonderful. Get creative though, throw a party, sell a funny shirt, let your imagination loose! If you craft, or have someone in your organization who is crafty, use them. People love to give, and they love to get too - give them something to remember you by.

3. Diversify

Ask people. Ask companies. Ask foundations. Ask grantmakers. Have parties, have annual events, have a donation jar at a coffee shop or book store. Ask for gift certificates from local stores and have a raffle party.

4. Look to your community for support

It's hard to see opportunities around you, but once you train yourself to use the connections you have within your community, you will see great benefits.

Local community dollars are not widely sought after, so its likely that you can ask for $100-$5000 from local businesses and no one else will. Keep your eyes open and put as much energy into asking your community to support you as you do writing grants.

5. Lastly, don't give up!

Fundraising is hard. It can defeat you when you don't see results or you can't run the program you want because you lack the funds. Try to do something related to fundraising every day (researching grants, writing, getting lists of businesses or people together) and don't worry if you're rejected.

Brush yourself off, learn from it, and ask again.

Thanks for reading! :) I also want to share a unique place to purchase gifts from give a gift that makes a diffence. Buy an inspirational gift from UNICEF
double your giving by shopping there.

Thanks again!

Questions? Complaints? Suggestions?

Great tips for non-profit fund-raising and I bet number one is really very hard! But I'm sure everything will be cleared out basing on what you have shard here! but I think I prefer to give than to receive (sounds noble, eh?) but i do. Last year, when I got very successful with my personal bank checks online, I given some to a charity fund here in our place and it was sure nice to see smiling faces because of that!

Tim,

I would suggest looking at grant makers that specifically fund prisoner re-entry programs (try the foundation center link). If you have a community foundation in your town, they would be a wonderful resource. I believe religious foundations would also be interested in supporting your efforts.

Thank you very much for the insight. I am a one man ministry and an ex-offender who has been called to extend a helping hand to other inmates who are being released from prison.

I've been continually rejected beause I also help ex sex offenders, do you have any suggestions?
Thank You
Tim
