Natural Rearing

(Note; Google ads, such as those above, are not endorsed by the author)

Well known author and herbalist Juliette de Bairacli Levy was the first to coin the term, "Natural Rearing" and it is with great respect for her, and her lifelong body of work that the "NR" community of dog and cat breeders continues to proudly carry that banner. While an interest in NR may be new to many, the method is actually many decades old, and proven in results thru many generations of animals raised to a status of superior health, longevity, and natural disease resistance through these methods. Dog and cat breeders who are, and who have in many cases been following these protocols for generations, sincerely appreciate the efforts of those who wish to add a judiciously bred and raised puppy or kitten to their family in seeking out the most healthy, most carefully raised baby they can find. They further appreciate the determination of those informed individuals to continue on an "NR" course of feeding and health care throughout the lifetime of their puppy or kitten. This lens is designed to help such interested ones to do just that. For those who have already done their research, and are ready to look for an NR Breeder, please click on this link to the NR Breeders web site

The NR Method

NR Breeders are basically holistic in their thinking,
which means they consider the impact of anything they feed, use as a treatment, or expose the animal to in terms of it's effect on the whole system. For example, they will not use a pesticide just to kill a bug on an animal when they know that pesticide can cause a toxic build up in the animal that can result in eventual liver problems, or renal failure, or nerve damage; AND they know there is a more natural and non toxic way of addressing the bug problem anyway! Looking at the health of the individual animal as a whole, and not as unrelated parts (such as a cat with sick stomach or a dog with a skin problem) helps a breeder, or a pet owner make choices that are supportive to the animal as a whole entity, with a view to supporting ultimate good health and longevity. Natural Rearing encompasses not just feeding real, fresh food rather than highly processed feeds with questionable ingredients and ingredient sources, but limiting exposure to chemical pesticides and drugs (including vaccines, which have become flagrantly and dangerously overused in common veterinary practice), and making such things as healthy outdoor exercise, good grooming, healthy play activity, socialization, and even the mental stimulation of positive reinforcement training all part of the protocol. Using systems of medical treatment such as homeopathy, herbal remedies, vitamin therapy, chiropractic, and other supportive regimens as a priority over drugs and surgery is another part of Natural Rearing.

While each NR breeder will have their own views and individual methods regarding the specifics they prefer in the care and raising of their animals, they are fully united in their determination to breed the most healthy, long lived, and emotionally stable dogs and cats possible. The results of their commitment to choosing the most natural and supportive methods available has proven to each one that NR is truly the only way to attain this achievement. Starting out with a puppy or kitten who began on the NR method in utero, or even several generations back in their ancestory, can only give the new pet owner the best possible reassurance that they are going to have a pet possessed of superior health and character for many, many years to come.

Over Fifty Years Of Natural Rearing

Juliette de Bairacli Levy's Complete Herbal Handbook For Farm and Stable was first published in 1952. In it, she wrote,

"There must be a reason for the present day disuse of herbs, and the popularity of chemical and vaccine therapy. Personally, I think that apart from the prevalent lack of time, or laziness, which makes the modern farmer loathe to busy himself with preparation of his own medicines, the cause is modern commercialism, and the power of advertisement... Science is proving the ruination of true farming; the only thing that I, and countless others have noted as flourishing alongside science, is disease!... I have had no failures with herbs; be the patient pigeon with a gangrenous wing or a Turkish camel suffering from scour. I have prescribed all treatments with confidence."

Today these observances carry even greater weight. With the unwitting development of "super virus's" and antibiotic resistant bacterias, modern science and modern medicine seem to have done more to create a plague on our society than to avert one. As one homeopathic practitioner noted, "Prescription and non prescription drugs are being recalled on a daily basis; some even before they have had time to hit the shelves! Yet in over two hundred years of use, not ONE homeopathic remedy has EVER been recalled. The homeopathic medical schools that were originally the only medical schools in the U.S. were replaced by Western medical schools for one reason only - Economics!"

Raising animals (and raising children, as well) on non processed foods and herbal, homeopathic, and other non drug medicines is regaining popularity in a society that has for too long been browbeaten into submission by the commercialism of modern medicine and modern food processing. It was Hippocrates himself, the oft proclaimed Father of Modern Medicine,
who stated emphatically, "Let your food be your medicine, and medicine be your food."

NR Breeders of purebred dogs and cats who have seen the generational ill effects of over-vaccination, processed foods, chemical use (household and direct application), and drug therapies on domestic animals are committed to protecting their own pets, and their future generations from shortened life spans, generalized ill health, and the frightening consequence of genetic mutations that have been proven to result from these "modern method" protocols.
The incredible results that they are seeing, in many cases in just a few generations, is not only testament to the value of the NR methods, but also to the determination of these breeders to do the best for their animals in every possible consideration.

Positive Reinforcement Training and Natural Rearing

In being a breeder or a pet owner concerned with feeding and caring for animals in a way that is supportive to the whole creature (holistic), it is only natural that supportive training methods are part of the regimen of care. Supporting a dog's natural inclination to want to please; supporting a cat's interest in exploring new things; and even supporting their appreciation for being rewarded for a job well done all fall under the category of Positive Reinforcement training. As it is with herbal medicines taking more time and discernment to choose and prepare than the alternative option of grabbing a pharmaceutical off the shelf, training an animal using positive reinforcement methods will take more time and discernment than using the "choke and jerk" military style methods we have been seeing for too many years now. A holistically healthy animal, however, is a mentally and emotionally well balanced and happy animal, and it is the rare NR Breeder who will not wholeheartedly use and recommend Positive Reinforcement training. With this in mind, we have chosen some of the very best books and DVD's on Positive Training for your consideration:

Homeopathic and Herbal First Aid

Homeopathic and Herbal medicines are two separate systems of medicine. As much as some homeopathics are based on certain herbs, there are other herbs that can actually antidote a homeopathic remedy. The use of either or both systems of medicine should be undertaken with research and the guidance of well informed individuals and practitioners.

That said, it is equally important to note that having a few essential herbs and homeopathics on hand is always a good idea. Your NR Breeder will likely supply you with a list of his or her particular favorites.

Regarding Homeopathics,

it's important to have such basics as Rescue Remedy and Detox within reach at all times. Arnica is used for pain and trauma, while Apis is used for snake bite and bug bites as defined in the Materia Medica, and Symphytum for broken bones. Cough/Athsma (Newton's Combinations) has been used by many at the first sign of Kennel Cough. Thuja is often used to conteract the negative effects of vaccines. The homeopathics below are being offered with the usual disclaimer that we are not prescribing, just offering you the information and a link to the products we suggest you research:

Regarding herbs,

Most of us already have a fair supply of herbs on hand right in our kitchens! Our grandmothers may well have taught us that Ginger is a quick fix for nausea, Cayenne is good for circulation, shock and trauma. Milk Thistle is a great detoxifier for the liver, Slippery Elm is soothing and healing to all mucous membranes (such as stomach and bowels) , and Valarian root is good for pain as well as calming. Our grandparents also very likely used Lavender Oil to help to heal burns, wounds, and insect bites; Witch Hazel as an anti-inflammatory and aid to stop bleeding, Aloe Vera for pain and swelling; and Yucca for their arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis, colitis, and other inflammatory conditions. Of course, again, we're not prescribing - just offering links to the products we suggest you research:

How cool. My mommy started this journey long ago but I helped her take it farther than she ever thought possible. She will write about it soon. Apollo woof
