What Makes The NREMT Exam So Hard?

NREMT Exam Guide

In order to best review and get ready for the NREMT Exam, you must first understand how the NREMT Exam is built. The NREMT Exam is built on what is called a Computer Adaptive Test (frequently referred to as C-A-T or CAT. ) This sort of examination is obviously computer based and is known to as an "adaptive" exam established on an Item Response Theory (IRT) that pragmatically gives questions based on the test takers response to preceding questions. This is obviously significantly different than a "linear" assessment in which questions are randomly chosen from a question bank. Computer Adaptive Tests are frequent in "high stakes" exams like the NREMT where by test taker proficiency is required to be measured as correctly as possible.

When creating these tests, every question is calibrated to establish what level of difficulty it will be positioned. This is achieved as a result of "pilot" questions inserted into each test that don't be counted for or against the test taker during the scoring of their assessment. The level of difficulty linked with the question pinpoints the "level of ability" necessary to answer the question correctly. Some questions are identified to be a low level of ability while others are identified to require a greater level of ability from the test taker.

The range of questions that every test taker is presented with deviates when taking this sort of an exam. As questions are answered correctly or incorrectly, the questions presented adjust in difficulty until a chosen level of proficiency has been established. This is accomplished ordinarily by starting off the assessment with questions a bit below the standard set for passing. After a sequence of these questions are answered correctly, the computer will select questions requiring a higher ability to answer properly. If the greater part of this specific collection of questions are correctly answered, the computer will once more, choose questions that require an even higher level of ability until the test taker reaches his or her highest level of ability. This the reason why the NREMT Exam "feels" more tough than traditional tests and also the reason test takers often times feel like they failed to score very well at the conclusion of the assessment. The correct and incorrect answers together with the level of difficulty of each question is placed on a standard scale to establish the test takers overall ability. When the computer establishes that the test taker is either performing above or below the standard, entry-level competency, the exam will stop. The test taker that demonstrates the ability to respond to the bulk of the questions accurately usually finds that their exam concludes early. This occurs when the computer is capable to see that the test taker is constantly able to answer questions higher than the standard, entry-level competency. The exam will end when the computer is 95% confident that the test taker has reached this level. Early completion of the examination might also happen if the test taker exhibits within 95% confidence that he or she are not able to reach the standard, entry-level competency. The most powerful method to make sure that you meet the standard entry-level competency when you take this assessment is to exercise excellent review habits and make use of effective NREMT exam study guides.

NREMT Paramedic Exam Preparation

Preparing For The NREMT Exam

Study Time

Allocate plenty of time beforehand to study. NREMT examinations are not something you should cram for. Create a schedule and develop a routine of studying for the NREMT during this period. Allocate the beginning of every study session when you are most alert to the areas you have a lot of difficulty. It's good exercise to study that evening, the material you discussed that day. If you go to a nighttime NREMT class, review promptly the following morning.

Audio Reviews

Audio NREMT Study Guides such as those you can use with an MP3 player or play on a CD in your automobile are an excellent source for studying. The repetition of concepts and theories can genuinely strengthen what you learn during class and review from your notes and guides. These usually are exceptional study resources for all those occasions when you would typically be unable to study for the NREMT like in the car, working out, jogging, etc.

Study Sheet

A quite helpful tool you can generate while you review is to summarize and outline the material to be used later on as a review sheet. Doing this accomplishes two things; First, it provides you with a fast, overview of the NREMT content for review at a later time, and by outlining and re-writing your content, it reinforces what you learned that day. Whenever you re-write an idea in your own words, it seriously reinforces those concepts.

Flashcards

Flashcards do the job quite well, especially when you need to memorize terminology or simple concepts such as drug actions, indications and dosages. The usage of flashcards will really improve your NREMT study time. Not to mention, flashcards imprinted on notecards are simple to take with you wherever you go so you can make the most of downtime to study such as when you travel, during lunch, etc. When creating your NREMT study flashcards, be sure to place them into groups for quick "grab and go" review.

Utilize Your Instructors

Don't limit the knowledge of your teacher to simply the amount of time you spend in school. Nearly all course instructors are more than willing to assist you outside of class, particularly if you're having difficulties with a specific subject. With the NREMT, it's very important that you fully comprehend all of the difficult subjects that you will be expected to understand for the NREMT assessment.

NREMT Review Groups

This is HUGE! If you don't already have a study group together, get one. Keep two things in mind when you are looking for study companions; Those that appear to "Get It" in class and those that reside near you. The first one is obvious. It doesn't do you any good to review with people that are really struggling unless you think that by helping these people you yourself will gain more expertise which is often the case. They say that if you can explain a concept, then you really comprehend it. The second is also important. Find individuals that live close to you. You will be far more likely to maintain a review schedule if you live close to each other as opposed to one of you having to travel an hour or more every time you plan on studying. Also, keep your NREMT review periods to a sensible amount of time and have a strategy on what you will study. I like 2-3 hours.

Practice Tests

I put Practice Exams last on purpose. While I believe practice assessments can be beneficial, I believe that individuals frequently depend on them way too much. These people take a few practice tests from a book they bought, do pretty well, and think they're done. This can really give a person false hope. I do feel that practice exams are good for helping to determine the areas you should focus your study. With that being said, the most effective way to pass the NREMT is to simply know your material. I think that combining a good practice test with good audio NREMT paramedic study guides, flashcards and review sheets are the most helpful.

How To Pass The NREMT Exam

Step To Pass The NREMT Exam

Before You Start

Since you will be allowed to look at the whole exam before you begin your NREMT exam and you are required to answer each question before moving on to the next one, you will need to be ready for whatever they throw at you. I suggest using the empty sheet of paper and pencil that they provide. Make use of this paper to immediately note down any little thing you think you might want to remember, such as drug drip formulas, the Parkland Burn Formula, the Rule of Nines for burns, etc. Do this as soon as you enter the testing area, before you start the assessment. The test is timed and you don't need to be hurried.

Read Each Question Carefully

I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times before, read each question thoroughly before answering. Are they asking for "everything except" or "the most" or "the least". Ensure that you comprehend what it is they would like to know before you answer the question. Repeat it back to yourself if you need to.

Do away with Incorrect Answers

After you read the question and know precisely what they are asking for, get rid of as many answers as feasible. This is, often times, is quite difficult during this particular exam because this exam expects you to recognize the "best" answer. You will probably find that more than one option may be an acceptable answer. You need to figure out which is the "very best".

Scene Safety and Personal Safety First

This seems to constantly trick people. A question could read something like, "You and your partner arrive first at a house fire. When you arrive a person lying down in the front yard that seems to have just exited the burning house and a number of bystanders are collecting in the road. " What is your very first course of action? A) Provide life saving steps to the man or women in front of the home B) Secure the scene by putting "Do Not Cross" tape along the front of the property C) Wait for firefighters to arrive D) Call for extra support. My answer? I have no idea, but one similar to this was on my NREMT assessment. I feel a very good debate could be made for any of these. These are the kind of questions you have to be very cautious with.

Pay Attention To The "Least Invasive"

This is a great rule for the NREMT Exam. In many cases, test takers want to "make use of their newly obtained skills" when in actuality, the most ideal therapy is often times the least invasive. Do not let the assessment drag you into choosing "Assist Ventilations With High Flow O2" on patient with a low oxygen saturation when "Provide O2 via a Non-Rebreather" is a choice. Quite often, the least invasive is the proper response.

In summary, next to nothing can replace good preparation. Set aside adequate study time, use study groups, flashcards, audio NREMT study guides and cheat sheets and then follow up with a practice quiz to see how you're doing.
