So Much More to it than Engines.
People, places and things.
In this lens I will show you some neat things about the world of N scale. N scale has a reasonably diverse amount of available, realistic items. You can create what ever kind of environment or scene you like. Sure the engine can be a big part of it, or you may do scenes with out trains. Use the items for photos. I've even seen the people and cars used in concept building models. You can make your own little sim world, or make a scene of your goals and dreams.
One great thing about N scale is the size. It's small enough to put up in an apartment on a table. You can even build it on a board that can be hidden away. In the photo is 2 buildings, they are the same one, but one the taller on is HO scale at 5" tall.
Many of the companies that make stuff HO scale also make the exact thing in N scale, with just a little less details. Like some of the N scale buildings might not have opening doors, but it still looks realistic and the tiny stuff is very impressive.
N scale Scenes and Other Things on Flickr
The N scale people are 1/2" tall.
Starting with the tiny people and animals.
The variety is endless
They come in all types of people, everything you can possibly think of.Workers, people doing stuff, races, body types, and so on. You can create your own "Sims."
I've seen nearly every domestic animal in N scale plus some wildlife. They even get down to breeds and you can tell too! Draft horses to ponies. Holsteins to Spanish bulls. Dobermans to poodles.
Be sure to keep an eye at yard sales for lots of boxes of stuff. There is usually some animals and people in there. EBay is a great place to find older items not made anymore or figures at a cheaper price. Just always make sure the shipping is fair.
The best thing to do if you want to see what is available is get on Walthers mailing list. They will send you their sale booklets once a month or so. It will blow your minds to see what is made in miniature. Keep an eye out on eBay for one of their older, full catalogs, they don't change their inventory too much and you can catch up on new stuff through their site. Each of their big catalogs has a section of photos from real set ups, they are worth seeing.

- Complete Beginner's Guide To Model Trains

How to save up to 60% on your new model trains and accessories!
How to make your own layouts, scenery, mountains, model people, lakes, smoke and more!

The tiny people need to get around
Autos, trucks and tractors
Some Micro Machines trucks are close to the right size. Also in the gumball machines where they have the cars in little boxes, the trucks are N scale size.
Again Walther's is the best source. Their monthly booklet has good deals on several cars and trucks.
EBay is also a good source too.

Amazing detail on the carrier and it comes with 15 little cars to load. By Bachmann, 1970's, one to watch for.

N people need some where to live and work
Houses and buildings
Of course your N scale sim people need to park their cars somewhere.Buildings and houses are made for every need. You decide what you want. Some people will actually build a replica of their own town and match the train track curves exactly. Or you can build your own dream world.
Some plastic kits such as Fuller or Volmer have their plastics already molded in colors so you don't have to do any painting.
You can also get buildings in period themes such as the 70's or 40's. Also some in German, American or other cultures. Many of the big buildings you see will be for Railroad type businesses, but there are others , such as theatres cafes, stores, really anything.
I'll show you weathering in another lens. Weathering is a way of aging the building to look more realistic.
Yard sales and EBay are great places to find buildings and houses already built. Usually they are sold in lots, or nice ones are sold one at a time.

Where tiny N people go to cool off

N scale plant world
Plants looks great unless you are doing a space scene
Grasses, and tiny green bits are available in bags. A touch of glue and careful placement with a toothpick works fine.
I will do a lens on how to make your own trees.
When you get already made trees online or at yard sales they are often crushed or unrealistic, so getting the supplies to make your own looks so much nicer.
Water! Yup there is some stuff that you can easily heat up and pour into a pond or over a water fall that when dry looks real.
Many sized of grave and rocks.
N people also need direction in thier lives
signs and signals
Some companies make great rub-off decals of advertisement such a s Coke-Cola or hotel names. Movie posters and graffiti.
Railway signal lights and street light are also available in electric.
Small lights are available for the inside of the buildings.
I really advise getting electric stuff bran new unless you know your wiring, incase old wire needs to be replaced.

Other odd mini N things
Stuff you may have not thought of yet
Available for the tiny world are outhouses, furniture, boxes and crates. Mail boxes, fire hydrants, trash cans, barrels, boats, and . Nearly everything that HO has except tiny things like tools, but I may have just not seen those yet.
There again watch for lots.

- I love making tiny things for my dollhouse, it's a 1/24 scale, but someday I hope to create an entire village on an N scale, I want to make like an old 1800's Victorian town outside of a farming village, and have a train going between them.

- Beautiful lens, very amazing.
Other train loving Lensmasters
- Fleischmann Trains
- N scale is the 2nd most popular scale for model trains in the United States. While there is some variation among manufacturers, Fleischmann N scale trains are about 1/160th the size of the real-life prototypes that they are modeled after.
- N Scale Layouts
- One of the advantages of N scale is that it allows hobbyists to build layouts that take up less space than HO scale, or put longer track runs into the same amount of space, because the models are smaller
- Train Birthday Party Favors and Supplies
- Choo! Choo! It's time for a Train Birthday Party! This theme is so much fun for little boys (and girls!) who love to play with trains. It also works great for a 1st Birthday Party theme.

Something interesting in N scale to collect
When it has a picture ad that takes up the whole side, it's called a billboard car.
This is a picture of a plain beer car in comparison to some.
