Music = Community

Nuci's Space, a nonprofit charity based in Athens, GA, is one of the newest additions to the Squidoo list of charities. That means you can donate lens royalties to the Nuci Phillips Foundation.

The Space itself is a fantastic concert venue in the most-bands-per-capita city in the entire world. It's also home to a host of other offerings, all put there to benefit the musical culture and the musicians of Athens-- and they're looking to grow to other cities.

Read on to find out how you can help, and why you should.

The Nuci Phillips Story

How the foundation began

The Nuci Phillips Foundation and Nuci's space were named in loving memory of Nuci Phillips. Nuci was 22 years old and a student at the University of Georgia-- he was both well-liked and respected for his music.

After a five-year struggle with depression, he took his own life. His parents started the foundation in an effort to prevent similar tragedies and to help musicians overcome depression.

You can read more about Nuci's life, as written by his mother Linda, here on the foundation's website.

The Response

The Nuci Phillips Foundation and its headquarters, Nuci's Space, are all about caring for people facing the same problems Nuci did. Their mission is to prevent tragedy by offering support and creating a community targeted to musicians.

Through Nuci's Space, local musicians can find camaraderie, support, practice space, concerts, and volunteer opportunities to serve others like themselves.

The Foundation also works with those who can't afford medical treatment (both psychological and physical) and helps to pay their doctor's fees.

While they're excited to help Athens musicians, the people at Nuci's Space would love to spread their services to other cities around the US. They need your help to grow.

Best ways to help Nuci's Space:

1. Go to the website and make a secure credit card donation.

2. Spread the word about this lens-- it'll help to get the word out, and my entire share of the proceeds is donated to Nuci's Space.

3. This one is free and takes 10 minutes tops. Make a Squidoo lens, set your charity to "Nuci's Space," and sell something. It could be anything (Someone on staff here at Squidoo raised tons of money for the Humane Society by selling tennis balls in bulk as dog toys)-- just use your imagination.

4. If you're in the Athens area, volunteer at the Space.
