Nuclear Power ~ Clean, Safe and Cheap?

Is Nuclear Power Worth the Risk?

We are told that nuclear power is the clean and safe alternative to other sources of power. We are increasingly told that we need to find alternative methods which decreases our reliance on fossil fuels, such as coal, and one which does not create even more air pollution.

Nuclear power is the way of the future, we have been informed: it is the new green alternative. It is better for the environment as it does not create air pollution, it is relatively cheap compared to other methods of producing electricity, and it is safe if appropriate precautions are taken.

"Appropriate precautions" is an interesting qualifier. What if the appropriate precautions are not enough? Following the earthquake which rocked Japan yesterday, 11 March 2011, and the associated damage to the Fukushima reactors, appropriate precautions are not enough.

Do you think nuclear power is worth the risk?

Yes, it is! What other choice do we have?

blackspanielgallery says:

It can work well as long as we are careful.

From long term view, my answer is "yes"

From long term, my answer is "yes"

No way, Monkeybrain!

valiapegli says:

I am not absolutely sure about it, because we have seen many mistakes in the past and also there are factors like an earthquake for examle we can't prevent its destructive qonsequenses.

sustainableenv says:

It's not worth the risks.

I think until technology can negate the effects radioactivity, nuclear power should be our last option.

Hafapea says:

No. I personally think solar and wind power are the way to go. Although, the draw back to using those is the amount of space needed to build windmills and solar panels. There's no risk of cancer or blowing people up, though.

sheilamarie says:

There are so many levels of danger in nuclear power that are seldom even addressed, such as what happens to the waste, waste transport, etc. And we are often told that the likelihood of major disaster is slim. What's happening in Japan now proves these accidents are inevitable. So I say, no, we need to find other answers to power production.

BuckHawk says:

I really think it's too dangerous.

The Future of Nuclear Power

Is nuclear power the way of the future?

What choice do we have? One the one hand we have depleting fossil fuels which constantly pollute the air we breathe or we have nuclear power which is volatile, but seen as the answer to our increasing demand for the power needed to lead our modern lifestyles.

Is nuclear power the only viable power source for the future?

Yes, I love my gadgets too much and there doesn't seem to be any other choice

No, I hope not. There has to be better alternatives!

valiapegli says:

I believe there are alternative ways of energy. I would be very glad if you visited my len All about green energy and leave your comment too.

emmanuel1016 says:

Oh there's this question again. But what about solar power? We can surely share resources like what we have done with oil. And the fact that solar can be found almost anywhere, I think nuclear power should sit still as of the moment.

---Chazz says:

Haven't we learned ANYTHING?

sheilamarie says:

If we are unable to cut down on our consumption, then we had better take a little responsibility for finding alternatives that don't sacrifice our children's and grandchildren's future. I personally think we can cut down in some areas. I also think smaller local solutions would benefit everyone.

BuckHawk says:

What about solar power? There are many alternatives and I think we are just beginning to really discover them.

Just imagine taking the responsibility for ten thousands of years … we don't even know about human civilisation 10,000 years ago.
Just imagine guatanteeing nobody will ever make a mistake.
    This is madness.

"Efforts to cover the spent fuel rods with cooling water have failed again and again, and now there is concern that at least one of the fuel rod storage pools may be cracked, meaning it cannot hold water. Thus, there's no way to cover the fuel rods no matter how much water you pump in (and the pumps aren't even operating yet anyway...)

The official government explanations about radiation exposure in Japan are an insult to intelligence. A few days ago, they would say things like "The amount of radiation people are experiencing is only equal to that of a chest X-ray." Today with the irradiated food, they now are comparing your exposure to "the amount of radiation you might get from a CT scan." What they don't tell you is that a CT scan emits up to 600 times more radiation than a chest X-ray.

What's next on this scale? Are they soon going to announce that people are only exposed to "the same amount of radiation as a miscalibrated mammogram?" And folks, the radiation exposure in Japan is constant radiation, meaning it's like getting a CT scan that just keeps scanning 24/7 (if you're close enough to the Fukushima plant). This isn't one limited dose that turns off in two seconds, it's an ongoing radiation avalanche that keeps coming."
