How To Survive A Nuclear Bomb

Ranked #1,415 in Education, #33,755 overall

Can you survive an nuclear bomb? What chance do you have of surviving nuclear war?

Are you able to survive a nuclear war? What are the steps you can take to ensure your survival after a nuclear bomb or attack? Can you survive nuclear attacks? What do you do when there is a nuclear explosion?

Despite the devastating consequences of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 people still survived. Many people of course survived the atomic bomb attacks and suffered radiation sickness and genetic disorders occurred decades later. Surviving an atomic bomb is therefore a relative term because you might survive the initial blast and still die days, months, years later from the after effects of burns and radiation. When I was at school I was given what was called a 1 in 10 talk. This meant that every tenth child was instructed how to survive a nuclear attack in the hope that a few people would survive and keep the nation going.

I was mystified even at that age, just how, armed with a bucket of water and a stirrup pump that I was going to douse nuclear fires. As for tying labels to dead relatives toes and leaving them outside that was quite another matter. Whilst the super powers of the mid 20th century might have reached an understanding limiting the increase and spread of nuclear weapons through the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

It seems that the 21st century world remains under the threat of nuclear attack from so called rogue states and terrorist groups. It seems self evident that such awesome power in the hands of the autocrat or the maniac is a terrifying prospect.

"I am become death,
the destroyer of worlds."

Nuclear power or nuclear weapons, Iran still wants to become a Nuclear Power

iran iran-nuclear iran-nuclear-weapon

Ironically Iran's nuclear programme was started by the USA. The big concern today is whether or not Iran is using nuclear technology for peaceful or aggressive ends. Whilst it seems that iran does not possess Nuclear Weapons at this time the situation is tense and fluid.

Many contemporary commentators are sceptical of Iran's nuclear ambitions, as seen in these cartoons.

The leadership of Iran perceives that it is 'hemmed in' by enemies, and despite President Obamas offer of open dialogue there has been little in the way of conciliation.

By February 2012 the temperature of diplomatic feeling towards Iran had significantly cooled with British Foreign Minister William Hague suggesting a new Cold War with Iran could be imminent.

You and the Atomic Bomb

An account by George Orwell

Orwell's essay You and The Atomic Bomb begins "Considering how likely we all are to be blown to pieces by it within the next five years, the atomic bomb has not roused so much discussion as might have been expected. The newspapers have published numerous diagrams, not very helpful to the average man, of protons and neutrons doing their stuff, and there has been much reiteration of the useless statement that the bomb 'ought to be put under international control.' But curiously little has been said, at any rate in print, about the question that is of most urgent interest to all of us, namely: 'How difficult are these things to manufacture?'
