Ok so you want to know how much your Personalised number plate is worth - whether you choose to sell the plate or are just curious - you've come to the right place.

It makes sense to think how much you paid for the Cherished number plate and how long ago you made the purchase.

Number plate values dont fluctuate too much over time and in a majority of cases there is a small increase in value each year.

So how much did you pay for your plate? and where did you buy it from? If it was bought via a dealer then there might be a slight premium which inflated the price you paid.

Either way - how much you paid for your Private plate is a good starting point.

If you are selling a BEN number plate and know there are many BEN number plates for sale at varying prices - then it's best to trawl the number plate dealers and number plate classifieds to find the most similar plate(s) to yours and see how much they go for.

Averaging the value of 3 or 4 similar plates is a good move - it's also worth checking more than 2 or 3 websites as number plate prices can vary from site to site as different number plate dealers load different amounts of commission onto their sales.

If your number plate will only appeal to a small niche group of people - think Porsche owners called Kevin - then you stand less chance of selling your plate than if it appealed to any Kevin or any Porsche owner.

Try to keep the meaning of your number plate as broad as possible as the more potential buyers you have - the higher the potential value of your number plate.

Sit down - with a cup of tea and a dictionary (or a coffee- it doesnt matter..) and spend some quality time working out who your private plate will appeal to and why.

If your number plate requires modification in any way shape or form - then in the eyes of the law it is an illegal number plate.

As the DVLA and the police are cracking down on such things it stands to reason that if your number plate requires illegal spacing or fonts then in time it will be worth less as less people want to run the risk of being caught.

We hate to preach - but steer clear of illegal number plates - there's always a better alternative - it just may take a little homework.
