Making a difference

The nurse who moved mountains!

Read the story of the Red Cross nurse who inspired Live Aid in 1985. Apart from Ethiopia, she's worked in places like Afghanistan, Sudan, Uganda and Lebanon. Amidst incredible human suffering she's helped people on a large scale, always doing a little more than required. Usually a lot more, actually. Claire Bertschinger made a difference, even if it meant moving mountains in the process.

Why I like it!

This book is really worth reading. I just couldn't put it down! It's refreshing to read the story of a woman who doesn't claim to be superhuman, even if what she accomplishes is reallly super. She also gets affected by the world around her, and she has seen a lot more than most of us. Despite this she continues doing good, not giving up.
Claire Bertschinger has worked as a Red Cross nurse in several countries, often under constant danger to her life. She relates how friendship grows between the most unlikely individuals, and how, eventually, she had to deal with the emotions brought on by the suffering she had witnessed.

A glimpse of reality.

"This was clearly the ultimate honour. They wanted to give their precious secret stash of chocolate to me. I had to eat it and as I did, I felt awful, knowing that whie this was a prize to them to me it was something I could get any time I wanted from a market stall in town. But I was profoundly touched too. I was reminded that it's not the size or the cost of the gift that matters but the reason for it and the way in which it is given."

How to help

There are many different ways to help needy people today. Some of us can go personally to different countries and help. Another way is to organize help from wherever we live. Still others donate money, clothes, medicine or whatever is needed. Some people have donated a cow, through this programme. A cow will make a big difference in a poor family's life. Everything is valuable, even the dung is used for fuel!

Amazing book! Now you absolutely made me interesting! Thanks.

No, I don't like this kind of books.

karmicchristian says:

Sounds very interesting. My genre of reading though is slightly different non-fiction. Thanks for the wonderful lens.

Tipi says:

If I had more time to read books, this would be one that I would like to read some day. Claire may not have had superhuman strength, but she may have had supernatural strength to keep her doing to what she has been called to do.
