Protocols, Protocols, Protocols...for Nurses.
This lens is a collection of protocols used by nurses.
Many of them will need updating but they're useful as starting templates for developing your own.
If you've got any protocols that are more up-to-date, or which aren't featured here, then feel free to send me the link and I'll add them to this page.
Or better still, you could even create your own lens now for any of the missing protocols and I'll feature them here on this lens.
A list of protocols for Nurses.
- Anaphylaxis
- Nurse Protocol for the treatment of Anaxphylaxis.
- Asthma Clinic Protocol
- Nurse Protocol for running an Asthma Clinic.
- Asthma Management Protocol
- These guidelines are for general care of the asthmatic patient by the practice nurse whom does not have the extended role in asthma management. This is covered under a separate guideline.
- Asthma Reversibility Test Protocol
- Asthma is a common disease affecting about 10% of the population and is characterised by being a reversible obstructive airways disease: performing a reversibility test is one method of diagnosis.
- B12 Injection Protocol
- In agreeing to undertake administration of vitamin B12 injections the nurse must assume professional accountability and ensure they are up to date with all aspects of immunisation as outlined in NMC Code of Professional Conduct (2002).
The doctor who delegates the task of administarion of the B12 injection has a responsibility to see that they are adequately trained and have the opportunity for regular updates (DoH 1996). - BP Monitoring Protocol
- Hypertension is a common condition affecting about 18% of the population and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
- Breast Awareness Protocol
- Breast Examination unlike cervical screening is not a screening procedure, and no Practice Nurse should attempt to reassure a patient that her breasts are normal. The Practice Nurse should stress to the patient the importance of self awareness and examination. Many women will find this difficult as they are unaware what normal breast feels like. Encouragement to examine their own breasts on a regular basis, will teach them what their breasts feel like.
- Cervical Smear Protocol
- Cervical smears may be undertaken by practice nurses who have undertaken the recognised training course and feel competent to perform this procedure in line with NMC guidelines.
- Chaperone Protocol
- A chaperone should be offered to all patients (male or female) undergoing an intimate examination, irrespective of the gender of the doctor or nurse (RCOG 1997).
If the patient prefers to be examined without a chaperone, this request should be honoured and recorded in the patient's notes or computer record( RCOG 1997).
Patient dignity, privacy confidentiality and the doctor/patient/nurse relationship all need to be taken into consideration when the use of a chaperone is considered (BMJ 1999). - Childhood Immunisation Protocol
- Target Group: All children aged between 8 weeks and 5 years.
- Chlamydia Screening Protocol
- Reason for screening: Chlamydia Trachomatis is a common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and exists in 5-8% of the population. 75% are asymptomatic.
It causes cervititis, endometritis, salpingitis, ^risk ectopic pregnancy, trachoma (ketatoconjunctivitis)
In babies, conjunctivitis and pneumonia. - Coil fitting/check/removal Protocol
- This can be done by any Doctor or cytology trained nurse 6-8 weeks after initial fitting/change, yearly thereafter (or at smear)...
- Contraceptive Pill Protocol
- This protocol is not designed to indicate absolute contraindications to prescribing oral contraception. Its purpose is to identify those women who can safely be reissued pills without needing to see a doctor.
- Depo Provera Protocol - First Consultation
- Clinical condition/situation: Clients needing contraception who have not previously used Depo-provera.
- Depo Provera Protocol - Late Attenders
- Depo provera works by inhibiting ovulation, in the same way as the combined oral contraception...
- Type 2 Diabetes Protocol - Diagnosis and Management
- Diagnosis and Management of Type 2 Diabetes in West Gloucestershire: a framework and recommendations for primary and secondary care providers.
- Ear Syringing Protocol
- It is essential that the health of the whole organ is taken into account in assessing the indications and contraindications for syringing. Ear syringing will be offered to the client when the ear has been examined and seen to be impacted with wax that obscures the view of the tympanic membrane. There must be no obvious signs/symptoms of infection or abnormality considered a contra-indication to treatment.
- ECG Recording Protocol
- ECG recording is an essential diagnostic tool for the immediate assessment of patients suffering from chest pain and for the routine screening of cardiac pathologies. In the same way, general nurses should perceive the ECG as another means of expanding their scope of professional practice which benefits the patients in their care.
- Emergency Contraception Protocol
- Emergency contraception (post-coital contraception) is a safe and highly effective way of preventing an accidental pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or a contraceptive accident such as condom breakage or slippage. Emergency contraception is neither suitable nor effective if used as a regular method of birth control.
- HRT Protocol
- Patients may be reviewed by the practice nurse once the patient has been established on HRT by the doctor.
Patients attend for review on a six monthly basis alternating with the doctor and nurse. - Hypertension Protocol
- British Hypertension Guidelines.
- Hypothyroidism Protocol
- Screening also indicated in patients at risk of iatrogenic hypothyroidism (ie post surgery), in the investigation of subfertility/amenorrhoea in women, and in the investigation of obesity, confusion and dementia...
- Vaginal Swab Protocol
- Aim: To provide adequate sampling for laboratory screening; to provide client with adequate information and advice; to conduct examination with appropriate expertise...
