The idea of creating an imaginative and beautiful space for your new baby can be daunting. This lens will help make it easier with ideas for choosing a color pallette and focal point as well as accessorizing - all for a beautiful nursery that can grow with your child. I am also including my suggestions for great decorating books and other helpful links, as well as a link to my website www.kellyrightsell.com.
Designing Your Nursery - Step by Step
- Start With an Inspirational Object -
For example, you may have a special keepsake from your own childhood...a toy, a lamp, an outfit, with special memories. Another great inspiration for a room is a favorite storybook from your own childhood or even a new favorite. Nothing reminds you more of your childhood than a favorite book! - Add a Little or a Lot of Color -
Consider the rest of your house. Do you like neutrals or lots of colors? Do you want your nursery to be gender neutral or boy/girl? Neutral colors such as soft green, yellow, beige, are great starting points because they allow you to add or subtract colors as you wish. Green, for instance, can be girlish by adding pink accents or boyish by adding blue accents. You could even use colors from a favorite book if it is part of the room's inspiration. - Add a Focal Piece of Art -
Choose something that is colorful and delightful and that coordinates, but does not "match" your inspirational item. A framed piece that is a little larger should serve as the main image. You can add complementary smaller pieces to form a grouping.
Little Boys Make Noise and Little Girls Dance and Twirl are two of the most popular from the Kelly Rightsell Designs collection because of their size and the ability to build an imaginative room around them. - Consider Adding a Mobile or Design on the Ceiling -
I painted a smiling moon over my daughter's crib, with stars and animal shaped clouds. It's nice for children to have something to focus on. - Add Functional & Beautiful Accessories -
Painted or fabric covered baskets for storing baby things, unique nightlights, painted or embroidered growth charts and whimsical shelves, sconces and window hardware all add to the look and feel of the room, bringing it together, yet still serving an important purpose. - Talk to Your Trusted Friends with Babies -
They can tell you which of the "must-haves" from the baby superstore you really need and which ones will simply add clutter to your home and disrupt the calm beauty you have just finished creating in your dream nursery.

Unique Homemade Storage Container For the Nursery
Personalized, Fun & Easy
You can make a functional showpiece storage container for your nursery or kids room with photo copies of photographs, fabrics, or cute wrapping paper. Take a metal wash tub from Home Depot, cut the photo copies to the desired size, then collage them onto the wash tub using modge podge with a brush. Modge Podge can be found at any craft store. Coat the wash tub with two coats of Modge Podge and let dry.I have included a photo of the one I made using several of the Kelly B. Rightsell Signature fabrics. Kids can help with this and it can of course be used in the playroom or older child's room as storage and a decorative addition.
