Who is this guy, and why is he holding a wine glass?

Trey is the original Blogging Nurseryman. Trey and his wife Monica own The Golden Gecko Garden Center in Garden Valley, California. He's holding the wine glass because he likes his wine.   Cheers!

A message from Trey

I started in the nursery business because I enjoyed plants and the outdoors. I grew up in Belmont, 20 miles south of San Francisco. While taking horticulture classes at The College of San Mateo my horticulture professor said I might be better off jumping at a job opportunity opening up at nearby Christensen's Nursery. School bored the hell out of me so I took the job and was soon delivering plants all over the The S.F.Peninsula.

Working at Christensen's we saw all sorts of interesting people. The area the nursery serviced include the most expensive real estate around. Randolph Hearst Jr., Shirley Temple Black, various Giants Baseball Players and Forty Niner Football players were customers. This is before Silicon Valley really got going 30 miles to the south. It was an old carriage trade nursery that originally started in San Francisco, but moved in the forties to the then more rural San Mateo County. I savor the seven years spent there.
The nursery parties were legendary!

Now my wife and I own The Golden Gecko Gardens and Nursery in Garden Valley, CA. Located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills at about 2000' elevation this is Gold Rush Country and the air is thick with the history. Which suits me fine as I love history, and if you combine history and horticulture all the better.

Years later if you asked me would I do it all over again I would say sure! Just beware the job of the nursery person is unlike any other. Its more of a lifestyle than a job. All consuming.

Important websites to visit

The Blogging Nurseryman
A garden center owner and nurseryman looks at the gardening scene in the 21st century. The challenges and joys of running a small garden center in the new economy. Hold on, it's going to get interesting!
The Golden Gecko Garden Center
The Garden Center was created by Trey and Monica Pitsenberger. Having met in a garden center, they have spent the last 27 years in horticulture. The culmination of that experience led them to, where else, Garden Valley. "We realize that this location is unique in California" says Trey. "Few garden centers have a year-round creek. In addition we have numerous 100 year old valley oaks that shade much of the Garden Center." Located at 2000' elevation the garden center is high enough to be above the intense summer heat of the Central Valley, yet well below the snow bound high country in winter.
The art of running a small garden center or nursery
So you want to start a nursery? Go for it! Just remember its a tough profession where only about 10% of new nurseries survive after three years. This means the field is wide open for hard working modern thinking types. Yes, you work on weekends.
Garden Voices
A place for garden bloggers to share their blogs as well as read other garden blogs.
Monrovia Nursery
Great picture libary and descriptions of plants the nursery carries.
Garden Rant
A great place to "rant" about the current state of affairs in the gardening world.

Parent Navel Orange Tree

I love history and horticulture and when can combine the two well I am all over it.

The tree I visited in Riverside California changed the course of history. From this tree all Washington Navel Trees descend. This tree started the great citrus era in California and now stands alone but for another orange and the original "Marsh" Grapefruit. The acre upon acre of orange groves this tree spanned are now long gone, paved over.
