Little Girls Dream of Being a Nurse!

Whenever people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would answer, "a teacher or a nurse". I dreamed of being a nurse when I was a little girl. I tried the teacher thing first because my dad said he wanted one of his kids to graduate from college. I failed miserably at college. So I decided to become a LPN (licensed practical nurse). It was a one year vocational program, not college, so Dad was a bit disappointed. Once I started classes, I knew I had made the right decision and chosen the right profession for me.

This page is going to include all the pages I have written about nurses and nursing, as well as pages written by others. I hope you will read them all.

I love being a nurse! I work in the operating room and have been there for 30 of my 40 years as a nurse. I returned to school in 1993 to become a RN. It was a great decision and I now have many more options in my career. I loved being a LPN, but I do recommend returning to school and furthering your education if you have the opportunity!

Nursing Icons

In The Beginning

Nursing has been around for a long time. I would say as long as there have been mothers, there have been nurses. Caring and raising children definitely qualifies someone as a nurse. Caring for those outside of our immediate family and dedicating their life to it, hasn't been around quite as long. Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton are two names that immediately come to mind when nursing icons are mentioned.

Writing About Nursing Icons

I have not written about Florence Nightingale or Clara Barton because there are so many others who have. Here are just a few examples about them and other nursing pioneers.

Thanking Nurses

Are Nurses Recognized Enough?

Loading

Yes, they get kudos all the time!

Not At All! We need to show them more often!

KokoTravel says:

People don't seem to recognize that it's the nurses who save the lives of patients. Physicians spend 10 minutes at the bedside of a patient in the hospital. It's the nurse who monitors for issues and makes the phone call at the right time in order to ward off an emergency.

Nurses generally make the call to the physician knowing exactly what she/he wants to do for the patient, but has to have an order from the physician.

Recognize a nurse today...

davespeed says:

No, we need to show more appreciation to nurses. I have been hospitalized several times over the last year and have come to really appreciate all that you nurses do. Thank you!

tssfacts says:

No. I don't know so much about now but when I was working they weren't.

bethd821 says:

While my patients are most thankful, I don't think we get enough pats on the back from our peers and our managers. I try to say "thank you" to my team members everyday. We do work really hard and it's good to know someone has noticed.
