National Nurses Week - May 6-12, 2011

National Nurses Week is celebrated during the first week of May each year.  Specific days are dedicated to different nursing specialties to celebrate their hard work and dedication.  Nurses work long hours and this week allows us to show them our appreciation for all their efforts and caring ways.  We can show the nurses we know that their commitment and contributions to quality health care are important to us.

National Nurses Day kicks off the week long celebration on May 6th.  The Wednesday of National Nurses Week belongs to School nurses and International Nurses Day wraps up the celebration on May 12th.

I hope this page increases your awareness of the importance of nurses in providing and promoting quality care to our children, our elderly, and anyone in poor health.

This is the 2011 logo for the theme of Nurses Week.

The Nightingale Pledge

The Nurses Oath

The Nightingale Pledge has been recited by nursing students at Pinning Ceremonies and/or graduation ceremonies since 1893. It is a variation of the Hippocratic Oath recited by physicians.

"I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician, in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care."

Another version of the Pledge.

Origin Of Nurses Day

Did You Know?

"The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.

International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this is the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week. Many websites, still record School Nurses Day in January, unaware of this change." From Holiday Insights

Operating Room Nurses Week and Day is celebrated in the second week in November. Other nursing specialties also have their own specific weeks at different times of the year. National Nurses Week celebrates all nurses at the same time.

Characteristics of a Nurse

Who Are They?

Nurses come from all walks of life. They are sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, moms, dads, cousins, grandmas, grandpas, and best friends. One characteristic they seem to have in common is dedication. Nursing is far from a glamorous job, but the rewards are great. Let's discuss a couple of characteristics displayed by nurses.

Nurses put in long hours for sometimes not so great pay. What keeps them coming back? Dedication. Nursing tends to get under your skin. Knowing that your knowledge and expertise helps heal the sick is a strong attractor. It is a very gratifying feeling that keeps you coming back day after day.

A caring attitude is another characteristic found in most nurses. Being able to deal with people when they are feeling their worst is truly a gift. Nurses are frequently referred to as "Angels of Mercy". A lot of nurses talk about having a "calling" to become a nurse. Caring is necessary for this.
