Nursing Homes Job: What it Takes

Ranked #121,976 in Business & Work, #992,777 overall

A Nursing Homes Job ROCKS!!

I'm making this page about succeeding in a nursing homes job because I am a fierce advocate for the elderly folks I work with in MY nursing home job. Those of us who already work in a nursing home, whether it is as a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, residential care aide, dietary worker, housekeeper or other support staff, we all know how difficult it can be some days. Sometimes the colleges who offer the training for residential care aides program make it sound like just anybody can work in a nursing homes job. I want readers to know what it takes to become a great caregiver in a nursing home.

My mission

I work in this business because caring and nurturing is my whole being. I cannot help but care for those who are vulnerable, who rely on the goodness of others for their absolute well-being. Elderly folks bring with them a lifetime of experiences. They have done their duty of contributing to the community in ways we cannot comprehend when they show up at our door with dementia or other debilitating circumstance. It matters not what has happened to them in this lifetime. What matters is their personhood. Each and every one of us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect to our last breath.

What it takes:

compassion

caring

gentle nature

quiet voice

clarity in word choice

patience

sense of humour

not taking it personally

personal strength and fortitude

“Most of what the media tells us about nursing homes is bad press. Much, MUCH, more goodness happens.”

The latest from Google about this

So much life goes on inside nursing homes. It is not a the warehouse that outsiders may think it is. Things are pretty quiet on the outside and any movements seen by outsiders is, well, pretty slow. There is a richness of life inside that only those of us who work in the field can understand and appreciate.

P.S. If you take away just one thing

It should be this: the elders of our community still contribute, but in a way most people are not aware of. If there were no nursing homes, we would not have the opportunities we do to learn and love with these very special people. I love working with the elderly population in our community within a community.
Important!

Nursing homes are still part of our community. Our elders deserve kindness, dignity and respect. Bring your best to them, each and every day. They're worth it, you're worth it.

What experiences have you had with nursing homes?

I want to hear the good and the bad...
