Nursing Careers and Education

Nursing has become the largest health care profession with 2.6 million registered nurses (RNs) in America. With this staggering number, it's surprising to learn that there is a still a high demand for nurses. One of the reasons for the popularity of the profession is it allows people the chance to combine a passion for science with a passion for caring for others. Although the high demand may seem surprising it is easy to understand when you look at the many different areas that nursing has to offer. Some of these are: hospitals, home care, private medical practices, public health, nursing home facilities, clinics, hospices, corporations, schools, and military service.

Nursing: A Popular Education

Another reason nursing is such a popular profession is due to the flexibility it allows. When choosing the field of nursing, one has the options of specializing in certain types of care. These can include: ambulatory care, burn care, emergency, geriatrics, pediatrics, intensive care, maternal and child care, surgical care, and psychiatric care. Another area of flexibility is the hours of work. Nurses have options of working anywhere from four to twelve hour shifts and can work during the week or on week-ends, during the day, or midnight shifts. This profession offers so many choices, it's easy to see why it's such an expanding field.

But before one enters the field, there is education required and the myriad of areas and their related areas of education can be very confusing. The main degree that every individual wishing to become a nurse needs is the BSN degree. This is also called a Prelicensure BSN and is what most nursing leaders prefer as this one provides the most opportunity. The BSN is also a pre-requisite for many positions. Usually the first one or two years are spent completing general education requirements and the last two years specialize in nursing. The BSN is the entry point for those wishing to pursue a career in nursing.

Nursing Degrees

For those who do wish to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing there are many different types of degrees to choose from. The LPN program offers a licensed practising nurse or a licensed vocational nurse to attain the BSN degree in four academic semesters, as opposed to four years. There is also the RN program (Registered Nurse.) This program is designed for those who have completed an associate degree or diploma programs who then want to complete their BSN degree. It gives nursing skills credit to those who have already learned through school or work experience.

These programs also provide very flexible schedules as they are often meeting the needs of working nurses. They may be held in the evenings or on weekends. For those that haven't yet obtained their nursing degree, there are second degree BSN programs. These give credit for having completed the liberal arts requirements. This lets one complete the nursing portion of the course in two years or less.

However, even though these programs are extremely flexible, many people still cannot attend formal classes due to time or budget restraints. This is why many online nursing schools have appeared making it easier for anyone who wishes to get a degree in nursing. There are many benefits to online nursing schools. They provide different programs such as public and health safety, medical and administrative services, medical and health professions, mental health services, therapeutic rehabilitation to name just a few.

Online and Distance Nursing Education

Online nursing schools follow a general curriculum. They focus mainly on the study of the different sciences relating to nursing. Some of these include: social sciences, physical sciences, and biological sciences. The foundation for all online nursing schools is a focus on sharpening the intellect and social skills and acceptability of the individuals. These are very important skills to every nurse. Online nursing schools are designed to help increase the student's specialized knowledge and skills they already possess. They are usually designed for those who already have a degree and wish to become registered nurses.

Online nursing schools can also offer many options for those choosing distance education in nursing. Students can choose distance education for a number of reasons. Those who don't live locally to a campus may choose distance education to avoid the cost of commuting. Distance education can also allow the student to study while they still meet the demands of work or family. Some students may find need to study in another language and this type of schooling allows them to do so.
