Nutcracker Christmas Ornaments

Nutcracker Figurines

Nutcrackers woodcarvings came into being in the 1400's. Originally they were woodcarvings of a soldier, knight, or king. The figurine had a large mouth that could be opened by a lever in its back. The big toothed mouth was then used to crack a nut. Today nutcrackers are mostly used for decoration, especially at Christmas time.

The Origin of Nutcrackers

The carving of the nutcracker figurines started out as a cottage industry in rural Germany. For many people woodcarving was the only potential source of income. The carvings were painted in festive colors and eventually evolved from a functional tool to a much prized Christmas decoration.

The years provided many famous wood carvers with their nutcrackers are now housed in museums and private collections. Steinbach Nutcrackers are the collectables today. There are Nutcrackers and then there are Steinbach Nutcrackers.

I have several nutcrackers, but just one Steinbach. It rests on my mantal from Thanksgiving through the New Year. I love it, not only for the outstanding craftmanship, but what it represents to me. It is tradition and honor. I can't imagine a world without both.
