February 5th is World Nutella Day

February 5th is World Nutella Day, and that is a great reason to devour lots of that chocolatey, hazelnut goodness. Whether you start World Nutella Day by spreading Nutella on toast, waffles, or oozing out of crepes, I'm here to give you ideas on how to incorporate Nutella into your entire day.

What is Nutella?

A Chocolaty Hazelnut Spread

If you don't know what Nutella is, you have been missing out.

Nutella (pronounced "new-tell-uh") is a spread made up of a mixture of chocolate and hazelnuts. Hazelnuts have a lighter, more exotic flavor than peanuts, and when mixed with chocolate, it becomes a smooth, satisfying goo to spread on anything you want, or just eat by the spoonful straight out of the jar.

That in no way sums up how delicious Nutella is, really I don't even have the words to capture the taste. Just try it and see what you think.

From Wikipedia:
"Nutella ... is the brand name of a chocolate hazelnut spread. Nutella, manufactured by the Italian company Ferrero, was introduced on the market in 1963. The recipe was developed from an earlier Ferrero spread released in 1944. Nutella is now sold in over 75 countries.

An older recipe, Gianduja, was a mixture containing approximately 50% almond and/or hazelnut paste and 50% chocolate. It was developed in Piedmont, Italy, after taxes on cocoa beans hindered the manufacture and distribution of conventional chocolate.

Pietro Ferrero, who owned a patisserie in Alba, in the Langhe district of Piedmont, an area known for the production of hazelnuts, sold an initial batch of 300 kilograms (660 lb) of "Pasta Gianduja" in 1946. This was originally a solid block, but in 1949, Pietro started to sell a creamy version in 1951 as "Supercrema".

In 1963, Pietro's son Michele revamped Supercrema with the intention of marketing it across Europe. Its composition was modified and it was re-named "Nutella". The first jar of Nutella left the Ferrero factory in Alba on 20 April 1964. The product was an instant success and remains widely popular."

A Day to Celebrate Nutella

World Nutella Day

A day to celebrate Nutella, sounds reasonable to me.

So many people absolutely adore Nutella that it's not surprising a day was created to celebrate the specialness that is Nutella.

World Nutella Day is February 5th, and was created in 2007.

I'm not sure how you'd celebrate World Nutella Day, but I do it by eating far more Nutella than is good for me. It's the prefect day to incorporate Nutella into every meal and experiment with all sorts of fun Nutella recipes. Or at the bare minimum grab a jar and a spoon.

World Nutella Day is February 5th.
Don't forget to celebrate it this year. And really, every day is a good one for Nutella.

Nutella Flakey Swirls
I suppose technically these being pastries they belong in the breakfast category or at the end of the day as a dessert, but I just can't help thinking they'd be perfect to slip into a lunch box for a special midday treat. Or as a lovely little teatime treat.
Whole Wheat Pancakes with Nutella & Mangoes
Freshly made pancakes smeared with Nutella and filled with pieces of mango. These look absolutely delish.

These are small little pizzas with luscious Nutella, ripe pears, and toasted almonds, and they look wonderful. I'd especially recommend making them among other sorts of small pizzas like she does so everyone can have a little of everything.
Could this be lunch? Nutella and Strawberry Panini
I agree with this blog post, could this be lunch? This Nutella and Strawberry Panini looks so sinful, but it is a sandwich. No exact recipe for this, but the blog gives the general idea of what to do.

Finish World Nutella Day with More Nutella

Nutella for Dessert

Finish World Nutella Day
with a decadent Nutella dessert.

Though known to most people as a breakfast food, my favorite way to use Nutella is as an ingredient in desserts. The sweet, chocolate, hazelnut taste works so well in cakes and cookies, and Nutella even works great as a frosting.

Melt a little Nutella in the microwave, and drizzle over vanilla ice cream.

Imported Nutella Hazelnut Spread

There is a lot of discussion on the airwaves about the difference between Nutella made in the US and Canada, versus the original European Nutella. I must admit that I have never tried European Nutella, though I certainly love the American version.

According to some people, the original European or Italian Nutella is less overly sweet and has much more hazelnut flavor. It even has different ingredients. Try and see what you think.

From an Amazon description: "Nutella has become very popular in the United States, BUT this particular Nutella that we carry is the original Nutella Italiana brand directly imported from Italy. You will not find this in most grocery stores and many Italians and Nutella fans agree that the traditional brand tastes much better then the USA brand."
