Coffee and your Health

Did you know in the last decade there have been over 19,000 clinical studies on coffee and the caffeine it contains? This plethora of new scientific research is slowly lifting the image of coffee as some sort of evil villain to be avoided like the plague if you want to preserve your health.

It has been established that coffee contains more antioxidants than any other beverage we normally consume. Even the caffeine in coffee is being devilified with the newest research. People drinking decaffeinated coffee for health's sake, are really getting less benefits, as you will see from research covered below.

New research shows moderate coffee drinking lowers risk of certain ailments, such as Diabetes type 2, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease, while it does not add to the risk of other diseases, as once was suggested.

But the most exciting news is the research being done on adding nutritional supplements to coffee, to produce truly nutritional coffee. Many juices, milk, and varieties of bottled water have been nutritionally fortified for years.

The big challenge with adding vitamins, minerals, herbs or other nutritional supplements to coffee is twofold. The #1 challenge is maintaining rich coffee flavor, and the second big challenge addresses the issue of what amount of supplementation is actually needed to produce desired and/or advertised results..

The best news is nutritionally enriched coffee is now on the market! It tastes great, and clinical studies verify the efficacy of the additional nutrients. What a concept - truly nutritional coffee! And, even more interesting, the nutritional ingredients are aimed specifically to aid very specific functions.

Have you heard the buzzword describing this new coffee concept? Are you ready for it? Here it is..... Functional Coffee! Functional coffee, or nutritional coffee, lends support to important health functions. Get facts on the health benefits of coffee in general, and the latest news on "Functional Coffee" right here. See if there is a function that fits your lifestyle.

Coffee - Number One Beverage Worldwide

Whether coffee is healthy or not so healthy does not seem to really impact the habits of a coffee-loving world population. There are 1.4 billion coffee drinkers worldwide. Put in a different context, almost one-third of earth's population drink coffee on a daily basis. There are over 1.8 million coffee drinkers in the United States. Even in Canada, coffee wins over tea.

Is it coffee's unique flavor, the caffeine boost or some unknown factor that keeps us glued to our coffee habits? It's different for different people.

The good news is no matter what your reason for drinking coffee, research is putting coffee in a healthier category than ever before. For those of us who truly enjoy drinking coffee, but not at the sake of risking our health, this is truly good news.

Latest Findings On Coffee and Health

A Quick Summary of the Latest Clinical Research

In recent decades, there have been more than 19,000 studies examining coffee's impact on health. As the results are tallied, the news is a good as that first sip of your favorite morning joe.

"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful....For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good." That is the opinion of Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world.

What are some of the latest research findings?

You can either read through a summary of some of the findings here, or skip to the next section and just watch a very informative video.

Coffee and Type II Diabetes

Harvard researchers analyzed data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years. Comparing non coffee drinkers to those drinking 1 to 6 cups of caffeinated coffee daily produced some vary impressive findings. Of course, researchers say more studies are needed, but the preliminary findings are: drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day can reduce diabetes type II risk by single digits. But having six cups or more each day slashed men's risk by 54% and women's by 30% over non-coffee drinkers.

Coffee and Cancer

A 1991 study suggesting coffee may add to increased risk of bladder cancer has been debunked by newer studies. The newest available data shows that coffee drinking is not a contributing factor in the development of cancer at any body site, and may be protective in relation to liver, lower bowel and ovarian cancer.

Again, this research is ongoing, to hone into details, but right now what they do know from the studies - there is a correlation between moderate coffee consumption and decreased risk with liver, lower bowel, and ovarian cancer.

Summing Up the Research

At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's Disease, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones. Six cups or more each day slashed men's risk of type II Diabetes by 54% and women's risk by 30% over non-coffee drinkers. Drinking one to three cups had a single digit reduction rate.

Other studies suggest coffee can assist with asthma, eliminate a headache, prevent cavities, and boost your mood. All in all, great news for the world's favorite beverage - coffee, Java, Joe, whatever you want to call it!

Tipi says:

A couple good cups of coffee a day seems to do the trick. I don't have any of the health problems it prevents. I'm Finnish and come from a long line of healthy coffee drinkers.

d-artist says:

yes, in moderation...all things in moderation is better for you...I have to have at least one cup of coffe to help me think and be creative...but then that's just me.

KarateKatGraphics says:

In moderation I think it's perfectly healthy. If you tend toward anxiety, though, like me, you've got to be careful with caffeine. I love coffee but drink it on the weekends only, and even then just a cup.

Norma_Budden says:

I've heard it said before that coffee was loaded with antioxidants - and I know antioxidants are friends, helping to protect us from free radicals. However, I rarely drink coffee. I enjoy it when I'm drinking it but can go long stretches between cups. I have a Pepsi every day. I don't suppose the caffeine levels in that would produce any benefit...:)

lakern26 says:

I agree if it means that I get to keep drinking my coffee every morning! Seriously, though, I've never thought that coffee was as bad as "they" say and I'm glad to hear that there is now research to back it up.

Disagree

NaturalMommys says:

Im going to the disagree side just to stand out LOL, but I do agree coffee can be loaded with health benefits but unfortunatly most of the time coffee has been processed with chemicals! It has always made me laugh when people get decaf because they dont want to harm there bodies with the caffeine but little do they know is that it still has caffine and not only that but it is majorly processed with chemicals to remove the caffeine! So my answer is agree and disagree, just depending what coffee we are talking about.

Functional Coffee

Fortified For Added Health Benefits

Functional Coffee fits into the fortified food category. It is gourmet coffee perfectly blended with scientifically proven fortified nutrients, commonly called Nutraceuticals. This is not a new concept. New fortified water products continue pop up on grocer's shelves. Fortified juices and milk have been around even longer. And there is a whole other list of fortified foods.

So, how did Functional Coffee come to be?

Back in 2003, two friends were seeking a way to stay fit, have more energy and have a simple way to achieve their fitness goals, all without undergoing major lifestyle changes. They saw all the fortified water being marketed, and wondered why no one had done the same with coffee. They determined there wasn't a better vehicle to combine existing lifestyle with health and fitness than coffee - something many adults enjoy every day. They embarked on an incredible journey to develop a product that not only would fit their needs, but the needs of millions of coffee lovers.

I no longer need a reminder to take my vitamins. Yay! I just drink my coffee. Sure don't need a reminder for that!

Which Function Fits Your Lifestyle?

Four Great Functional Coffees

What is your focus in your health and fitness goals?

If your top concerns revolve around healthy ways to boost energy, improving mental clarity, immune system support, and the big one - losing weight, then there is a functional coffee that just might give you the extra edge in meeting your health and fitness goals.

Function #1 - Energy Extreme 62
Whether you want maintain and sustain energy during a fitness workout, or you need an energy boost to help you stay alert on a long drive, Energy Extreme combines green tea, vitamins, and thermogenic enhancers to give you that extra boost to get more done.

Function #2 - Focus Plus Multi-Vitamins
If you ever wished for a little extra boost while studying for exams, completing a time sensitive project, or a really important task that requires focus and concentration, Focus Plus with Multi-vitamins could be your champion for the day. It literally is designed to give your brain a boost. It boosts mental clarity, and provides neural support. I personally love the rich, dark roast flavor of Focus Plus Functional Coffee.

Function #3 - Immune Boost
When is the last time you had a cold, or the flu. If you rarely catch a bug, you can thank your healthy immune system. On the other hand, if you seem to catch whatever is going around the office, or whatever the kids bring home, then your immune system could use some support. That support could be as easy as drinking your normal daily dose of coffee. How simple is that!

Function #4 - Diet Plus 62
For millions of people who are fighting the battle of the bulge, Diet plus may be the best news of the 21st century (myself included.)

A unique combination of minerals and herbs helps curb appetite, boost the metabolism through thermogenic action, increase energy, and sustain energy during exercise. People are raving about results from drinking 2 to 3 cups a day, either just before, or during their meals.

For me, when I eat really healthy, I never seem to feel full. Diet Plus takes the edge off that hungry feeling. Another huge benefit for me. For some reason, it is much lower acid, and does not cause me stomach upset when I drink it in the afternoon on an empty stomach as a "pick-me-up."

Some see really fast weight-loss results, for others, the results are slow but steady. No matter what results you experience, you will enjoy the rich, gourmet coffee flavor!

News Alert!

People forget to take their daily vitamins, but no coffee drinker forgets to drink that daily morning cup of coffee.

Love Functional Coffee

How do I brew individual servings?

This is a great question. We all agree - freshly brewed coffee has the best flavor. There are many great coffee makers for brewing a pot of coffee, but what if you are a single coffee drinker? Here are some ideas.

If you are in a hurry, check out the one cup electric coffee makers that produce anywhere from 12 to 20 ounces of coffee and take just a few minutes to get your morning brew.

If you want the richest taste, treat yourself to a French Press. Understand French Press terms. In Press language, 1 cup = just 4 ounces. Also, brewing coffee in a Press takes 4 minutes brew time, with a little bit more cleanup.

The suggestions listed below are just a few brewing options easily ordered through Amazon.
