Good questions, read on..

Why Did Garmin Discontinue the Nuvi 760 GPS?

As newer Nuvi's come out, Garmin has been discontinuing some of its older GPS models to make room. It is sad to see some of these popular units go but many feel that there are already too many different Nuvi models to choose from and that cutting that selection down will improve the overall selection process in the future.

"Discontinued" - What Exactly does that Mean?

So what exactly is meant when Garmin designates a product as, "Discontinued"?

It simply means that it has been removed from the current production schedule. This is important because from what I understand it isn't unusual at all for a "discontinued" product to be temporarily put back into production if demand is high enough, or one of the manufacturing plants calls up and says, "Hey, we've got enough parts to build x number of model xyz product, if you're interested".

I do not know if this has or will happen with the 760, but judging by its popularity I wouldn't be surprised.

Warranties for Discontinued Nuvi 760 GPS

Before buying any discontinued product, GPS, TV, or what have you, knowing whether or not the product's warranty will still be honored should be a major consideration before pulling the trigger.

Fortunately this is not an issue with the Nuvi 760 GPS at this time as long as the unit was purchased "New" from a supplier that is an authorized Garmin dealer (such as Amazon). The standard 1 year warranty will remains intact.

Future Repairs for the Nuvi 760

Where repairs are concerned, Garmin has said that the Nuvi 760 GPS will continue to retain the same ability to be repaired as any other Garmin device, discontinued or not. Therefore parts do not appear to be any issue here either.

Software Updates

Software updates become the more significant questions. Where firmware updates for the Nuvi 760 GPS are concerned, I would not expect to see too many more updates from Garmin for a device that is no longer "in production".

One would hope that this is not really an issue though considering the advanced state of the life cycle. It may be a bit ignorant to say, but I would like to believe that Garmin has found and squashed any and every major bug imaginable by this time.

As for future feature updates, I would not expect any of those to be coming for the 760 in the future either.

Map Updates for the 760

Future map updates remain a bigger question mark. Garmin's official statements have been that map updates will continue to be made available for the Nuvi 760 GPS but they do not say for how long.

Is a Discontinued Nuvi 760 right for you?

If saving money is the main objective but you refuse to compromise on performance or quality, I would say yes, a discontinued Nuvi 760 is a good choice as long as you buy from an authorized dealer (such as Amazon) to ensure a valid warranty should it ever be needed.

Nuvi 760 Video - Product Review

This is a great Product Review video for the 760 if you are interested. It is a few seconds over 9 minutes long, but I think you will find that it warrants the extra time.
