Is ATI or nVidia Better?

ATI and Nvidia are the leaders of the GPU market. When you upgrade your graphics card you usually have to choose between similarly priced and positioned products from these two companies. But how do you know if ATI or Nvidia is better?

You will find more information about both GPU manufacturers, as well as AMD Radeon and Nvidia benchmarks and performance comparisons below. Don't forget to check out our ATI vs Nvidia discussion below and vote in our poll!

About nVidia

Click here to find our more about nVidiaNvidia is a GPU (graphics processing unit) and motherboard chipset manufacturer based in Santa Clara, California (US). It was founded in 1993 and since then became one of the leaders in gaming and professional graphics. Nvidia was the first to introduce a graphics card with on-board transform and lighting (T&L) - the Geforce 256 - in 1999. The GeForce brand became highly popular and with the exception of FX series these cards have always been some of the best on the home graphics market. The popular gaming console Playstation 3 also uses Nvidia graphics.

In February 2008 Nvidia acquired Ageia Technologies and started integrating their physics engine, the PhysX into Geforce cards. All Geforce 8 cards and above now support PhysX hardware acceleration for PhysX-enabled games.

About AMD / ATI

Click here to find out more about ATIATI was a major designer and manufacturer of GPUs and motherboard chipsets until 2006 when it was acquired by AMD. Even though ATI no longer exists as a company, the popular brand is still being used for graphics cards (at least until 2011, when it will be discontinued).

ATI was founded in 1985, producing graphics cards for PC makers like IBM. They launched a highly popular Radeon GPU line in year 2000. After ATI's acquisition by AMD in 2006 the newly renamed AMD Graphics Product Group continued making high-end graphics cards for gaming and professional work. The popular Xbox 360 console also uses an ATI graphics chip.

nVidia is better than AMD!

Kamrul Hasan says:

usually everyone knows me as amd fanboy but i'm not. i tell what is truth.. the new nvidia gtx 600 series performance is come out to open air.. though it is not published.. but if the leaking is true here now nvidia wins... why? i've compared the hd 7950 & gtx 660 Ti via gpureview.com.Both of them same at the performance.both of them draw 200W power. So in here both of them are same. But amd fall behind on price!! where amd costs 449$ on sapphire hd 7950 here rumor going out gtx 660 Ti will only be 400$ if this is true then for now nvidia is the best.. but amd can down their price highly when nvidia launches their new card and they usually do that...let's see what happens????
and this is for those who only shout about nvidia physx. for their concern amd card (not the very old versions) fully support physx u just have to download the software and install it.. So if u want to compare two brand bring those topics which really counts.don't shout out unimportant shit.........

GTX fan says:

nvidia gtx 580 kicks ati's ass

Sonyboy says:

if sony uses nvidia, i have no choice but go with them.

SaintBoss says:

I dont care if it is expensive. I regret choosing HD5870 over GTX480 2 years ago cause its cheaper.. It gives me a lot of problems. for 2 years having this HD5870 it really sucks. 7970 and 7950 is out now but I dont care and both are overpriced right now. Im getting the GTX670 or GTX680 cause I get what I paid for, and replace this crap amd/ati...

corvey says:

Spyre and Gr33nGecko are lovers, that's why ATI sucks. There is too much dick sucking going on.

Kamrul says:

at ®
yeah definitely nvidia will come out with better card but that will be too expensive to buy!!!!!!

Sulsera says:

Nvidia- The higher expenses are put toward directx and other things, that they allow amd to use.
Ati suffers from bad programming, not even allowing games to use the card itself and pushing everything onto the Ram, causing frequent memory leaks

Maxy says:

technically both amd and nvidia suck since we are in 2012 and they can't even make a 5ghz gpu card that can run a 2007 game maxed out on 4k *crysis*

Robin says:

To all of you people on the AMD side that use to have problems with nVidia cards: Dont expect miracles if youre sitting on low-end budget motherboard for 90$. Those are NOT made for gaming and perform thereafter. End of story!

Robin says:

I would definitely say nVidia. I work in a computer store, and there is BY FAR more problems with the AMD. RMA, DOA, performance issues due to bad drivers and firmwares, unstable reference GCA. AMD have been pretty decent, but for now they just doesnt make sense. Yes its a couple of bucks more on the nvidia cards but you get what you pay for.

® says:

@Kamrul
you mad bro?? GTX580 is getting old and its not fair to compare it to 7970.. And GTX680/780 is coming soon and smash 7970 to dust... your the one who is fool :P 7970 and 7950 are overprice for now, AMD is making some market gimmick cause Nvidia's next gen gpu that will smash their 7xxx series is not yet on the market.. wait until GTX600/700 series is out.. AMD really sucks, having a terrible drivers and softwares. see some forums that a CFX 7970 has getting a big issues on their latest drivers..

U nvidia fanboys are only talking about performance but price and power r as important as performance..i think u all have one sided brain, bcoz when u talk about one think u totally forgot about other things!!!!!!! u all tells that HD 7970 is only 15% faster than GTX 580 but both are the same in price and same in power consumption. what will u choose when u get more performance at the same price???but NVidia fanboys are preferring at the lower performance....They r fool or intelligent i dont know!!!!!!!!!!!!

pande says:

Ati ruined 2011 for me. Rage, Saints Row3 , LOTR :war in the north and many more

2006 to 2010 was nvidia and im going back to nvidia this year. 2012 and the future will belong to nvidia or atleast anything better than ati.

nvidia awsome for 3d gaming and blu-ray!!

EX says:

7970 is not so convincing.. only 15% faster than the GTX580. its very sure that a GTX670/770 will match the 7970 and the GTX680/780 or rumored GTR685/785 will be the fastest this 2012. Im gonna wait for GTX680/780. buying 7970 now is not worth it cause the price is very expensive, should wait for nvidia's next gen gpu's cause amd will be more cheaper...

TheNostalgicOne says:

I still use X700 in my new PC. Why? Because AMD destroyed excellent display of video playback. The new 6670 is total crap: shitty picture and inconsistent playback. It's 2012 for gods sake!
Yeah, I don't play games.
I only hope nVidia still has it.

Using a GeForce GT 530 now after having a 4850 for some 3 years. The 4850 was a gaming video card, the GT 530 is not a gaming video card. It has 2GB/DDR3 memory in comparison to the 512MB/GDDR3 I had on the 4850. Nvidia runs smoother and it doesn't crap out after an hour of playing Combat Arms. I'm not much of a gamer, but I like the fact that Nvidia could make a card that's so small and more powerful than a card ATI made exclusively to PLAY GAMES and doesn't fail. In fact, CA looks and feels better with Nvidia. My only complaint is towards ATI/AMD; fix that issue you have with Fake pixelation, and your heat dissipation sucks. My nVidia card is not intended for gaming but it does it just fine. ODD. You wouldn't believe how many times my ATI card crapped out on me, just for getting too hot.

Mars says:

@Arthur, lancelot is right. GTX680/780 is coming out soon and will kick 7970's ass :P 580 will not pass the crown to 7970 cause the real champion is not out on the market. Im glad I dispose my radeon gpu since 4xxx series after having some horrible experience on it and very unstable, my crap 4850. I replace it with GTX460 when it was released. I really dont care if both company will have the fastest like the gtx590,6990,580.. All I need is stability and very clean performance, and I didnt experience it on radeon.. yeah sometimes nvidia had their problems on their softwares but not as terrible as ati/amd, and they can fix it with little updates.. and my next gpu will still be from nvidia I will replace my GTX460 when GTX 600 series is out. I dont care if 680,7970 7990 and 690 will be the fastest cause I dont need those ultra performance. your 5770 is still a good card btw, hope you wont get any trouble on it like we experience on ati/amd

Lancelot says:

@Arthur
yeah the shit 7970 claiming they are the champion even if the 580 is getting old, benchmark results only 10% faster and 5fps faster than 580. AMD didn't think that the GTX680/780 is coming out soon and smash their 7970 to dust. as I said before I sell my HD5970 and replace it with GTX570 and add another for SLi I already tried none SLi and Sli. Those driver issues is still a shit for me even my HD4870x2 few years ago. and also your 9800GTX is already old and ancient.. after trying Nvidia on their GTX500 series I never got any problem.. I was an Ati/AMD radeon fan before since 3xxx series to 5xxx series but now after Nvidia gives me this stability and performance, I will never go back to radeon anymore. I stick with my 2 570's and my next gpu will be still nvidia maybe the maxwell, I'll skip to kepler cause this 2 570's is still running great...

Lancelot says:

@claysm
I my self had the fastest radeon card before the HD5970 but its still a crap cause it can't even give me stability.. it gives me grey screens, screen tearing, crashes, flickers, etc and all types of problems even driver is updated, so I sell it and replace it with two GTX570. I dont care if radeon is cheaper cause it has lots of consequences. I will never go back to radeon anymore, Nvidia is lot even better, stable softwares and drivers,I never got any problem on nvidia. cause YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Lancelot says:

@Arthur
your HD5770 is weak, cant even match my SLi GTX570, Im running 3 1080p displays on surround mode.. my last ATi gpu was HD5970 but because of some issues on the drivers I sell it after a year and replace it with gtx570 and add another on SLi mode..

Lancelot says:

5770 is weak :P

pro says:

I dont care if radeon has 6990 or nvidia has gtx 590 gtx580. for my experience on radeon their software and drivers really sucks! I have HD5870 before, yeah its fast, but its still sucks cause it wont give me stability. their softwares and drivers, it flickers, gray screen and programs crash sometimes BSOD!. I replace it with GTX570 and those problems never happened.. I will not deal on radeon anymore.. you dont need a overpowered GPU's like GTX580,590 and 6990.. even a GTX460,560 is enough..

HD7970 sucks.. only 10% better than GTX580 and its very sure the future GTX680 this 2012 will smash 7970 to dust :P

NimrodAUS says:

I have had a variety of both ATI and NVIDIA Cards. I have had one NVIDIA Card Fail on me which was annoying but I guess thats what you get when you buy from ebay. Heres some interesting facts, Like i think most people, they have a spacific game that they want to run well. Mine Is ARMA & ARMA 2. ARMA 2 Seems especially demanding, I am running an overclock Core 2 QUAD Win 7 64Bit 4 GB ram, RAID. Now with 2X ATI HD4850 in crossfire (crossfire working in game and windows) on average was able to run ~18 FPS with EVERYTHING Maxxed. @ 1080p. With an Ancient nVidia 8800GTX i was running ~30+ big difference idk why. Even turning AA and other settings down or off i was unable to get ATI to breach that FPS mark. So yeah Both ATI and nVidia have cleaned up there act with there driver packages and programs and I have to say my Computer seems just a little bit quicker with the older NVIDIA card. Sure its not "as powerful" and windows benchmarks give it a slightly slower graphics score but it runs all my games better, Crysis, ARMA2, Fallout NV. So When I upgrade my card in the next few weeks ill be looking towards Nvidia as the just seem to offer a stronger package. But every Model card is different and this is just a comparisson of two cards similar in performance

SoappNinja says:

ATI used to make good graphic cards, until nVidia shot and arrow to ATI's knee! WORKS SMOOTH ON SKYRIM!

Alex says:

nVidia is better.

Tommo says:

Every single ATI card ive had from their 6000 range has failed on me. my ASUS 6950 2Gb was shockingly sluggish, it couldnt even run Assassins creed brotherhood on medium settings, it couldnt even get to 18FPS!!! the 6970 had a small margin of better performance but i reverted to my GTX295 1792Mb GDDR3 and never looked back.... this 295 STILL has the power to make ATI quake in their boots!!

David Rethwill says:

Okay haters. I have a radeon mobility 5470 in my laptop and it works great for me. Yea, ATI does the job, but when comparing clock speed such as core speed, shader speed, and memory speed, any nVidia card dominates and ATI card when they are purchased for the same price. The top cards from each contend well, but nVidia does win. It's not an opinion. ATI has faster shader speed and faster memory speed, but nVidia has 2x as many pipelines, 4x as many transistors, and faster core speeds. nVidia is a better buy for a cheaper price. I am a fan of both, but nVidia's statistics are the leading cards as of December 2011. READ THE FACTS BEFORE ARGUING PLEASE -.-

luvhammers says:

nVidia all day long.

SupremeM (correcting myself) says:

Fixed sentence #1:

I wish when I bought my new AlienWare computer, I wish* that I chose the nVidia graphics card instead of the cheaper ATI.

Expanded details of explaining point:

Why the heck do I have to buy an entirely new nVidia graphics card JUST to replace the ATI graphics card in order to play a PC game?

Everyone knows that they can't get the game to run on an ATI graphics card as long as windows 7 is the operating system for the computer that physically has the card hooked into the slot..

Download latest drivers? Doesn't work.

Mess around with Catalyst Control Center until it finally works? Tried it, didn't work work either.

Reconfigure game settings via external configuring program? Still not working.

Trying to use the "Run this program in compatibility mode for: [incert operating system name here]" feature? All 12 options in the drop down box didn't work...

The only thing left to do? Replace the entire ATI card with a nVidia card.

That is the only thing I haven't done yet. Why? Because I don't have too much money to spare now.

SupremeM says:

The ATI graphics card is incapable of working properly with the classic PC game "Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear".

And as far as all of us who are familiar with the game know, the nVidia video cards have never had any problem with the game.

nVidia works with the game and ATI doesn't.

I wish when I bought my new AlienWare computer that I chose the nVidia graphics card instead of the cheaper ATI.

If ATI didn't have these ridiculous problems that were responsible for WASTING MY MONEY, then I wouldn't be complaining.

Why the heck do I have to buy an entirely new graphics card JUST to play the game?

I mean come on ATI -- these graphics cards are expensive and cost money, but if you could ever fix your weird glitchy graphics card problems to make it so that your graphics cards do not freeze up, cause blue screens, screw up people's PC game play etc. that would be great.

I mean really: do you really think we payed MONEY to have computer problems and frustration?

How hard for you could it possibly be FINALLY correct the flaws in your graphics cards to prevent all of these problems?

Why do I never hear about nVidia graphics cards causing all of these problems? (incompatible with certain PC games, blue screens, random freezing, and all kinds of stuff)

Why is it always ATI?

I didn't pay over a hundred dollars in cash for THIS!!!

AMD is better than nVidia!

Ezera says:

I vote AMD because it's a more efficient architecture. With a die size that is only about 60% the size of competing nvidia cards, AMD manages to always be close to comparable in performance. Imagine if AMD decided to shoot up their die sizes and pack on the same amount of transistors as nvidia? I already know what nvidia would do to compete: make a bigger, more power hungry gpu. A bigger gpu also means larger cost. That means that AMD makes considerably more money per gpu sold than nvidia. But unfortunately nvidia has a great marketing team.

Joseph says:

With the cheaper prices, you can afford to run two AMD's in crossfire. If you don't have the desire for two cards, the new 6990s are the fastest graphics cards in the world.

It depends on the hardware/software (drivers) generation @ a specific point in time. Whoever does it best in a snapshot in time will take the crown. I use cards from both but since my current setup is amd (and there's no "non-fanboy" option), i'm forced to select the current setup for this poll.

nsk says:

nVidia is shit. It lags, it bugs,...
ATI is cheaper and better. Their control center is better and it is easy to use that graphic card for professional and home use.

Hasan says:

Personally I prefer AMD (not ATI anymore). Why? Bang for the buck. I have a 6950 and i only payed $240 for it (the 2GB xfx based off the reference card). I play all games on max no problem. Nvidia does have better tesselattion and more connections with games devs (leading to games performing better on nvidia because of developing on nvidia cards) but overall bang for the buck goes to AMD. even the 7970 outperforms the gtx580 and costs about the same, if not less.

Jason says:

I had to let go of my 2 SLI 570's because they didn't have the power to push my Nvidia Surround Gaming with 3 23 inch Acer Monitors at a Bezel compensated resolution of 5980X1080. I picked two HD 7970's performance has been great with them in crossfire. Little hitches here and there, but that's what you get for being bleeding edge. It will get worked out. I am pretty netural though it's just luck of the draw with what graphics card I go with at the time I am building a new rig.

@Arthur I'm still in favor of radeons here, but the GTX 580 is more powerful than both the HD 6950 and 6970, and the 7970 isn't out yet. So yes, as I said, the 580 is the fastest single gpu card on the market right now. But the 6970 is about $150 cheaper, so ATI all the way!

"headshot" As a reply. My card, I love it more than my last 2 GTX's its fast as fudge out a babys butt. http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/5gpmd/
I play what I like at the settings that I like. Im just waiting for my 2nd one to arrive. :D You go ahead and keep pumpin the "GeForce-them to buy it". And I will love my ATI. This battle will never be over with. Even with the 7970 out on the market shitting on the world. And Nvidia still saying buy us , be us, uuunhhhh!! LOL

Its hilarious the shit NVidia fanboys come up with. The firmware and drivers are of the same quality, and the only other deciding factor is the manufactures of the card, and both nvidia and ati cards are manufactured by 3rd parties. get your heads out of your asses guys, really.

Faizan says:

no thi is wrong i thing ATI better then nvidia

claysm says:

@Lancelot saying that the HD 5770 is weak compared to the GTX 570 is a worthless comparison, since the 570 is triple the price of the 5770. Tom's Hardware recently released an article of the best gfx cards for given price ranges (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html) and of the 13 cards recommended, 9 of them were radeons. So in terms of value for money, radeon all the way. And some of the nVidia guys seem to forget that while, yes, the GTX 580 is the most powerful single gpu card on the market right now, they also start at $500 minimum (so of course it's an awesome card). So while I'll admit that nVidia is ahead at the very top end, any where else on the scale radeons are the clear choice.

Arthur says:

@ lancelot weak, for under a bill, i can play 1920x1080p high to sometimes highest settings in all the new titles , with only one. While my nvid sli,gtx number number series friends are asking me how I run so fast when i play. -.- My "gee, force it to work" gpu's were very well built cards. but they also revolved around a idea that since a company makes their tiers of cards so drastically different in price that they can hoax their customers into buying 3 of a a cheaper model in hopes that it will keep up with an under classed ATI competition.

Arthur says:

I have owned many Nvidia cards. The 8800GTS, A horrible p.o.s 9600gt with 256mb RAM (it was sold as 512RAM) I have had some Quardo's @ work, and The last I had till I took it out yesterday, was my 9800GTX+OC (that I overclocked even more) Nvidia let me run 2 monitors while doing all kinds of video demanding stuff with ease. Playing games, the 9800GTX+OC was like a bright candle in the fog. (pointless and counter productive) I play a few demanding games like Crysis/warhead/2, Alliance Of Valiant Arms, StreetFighter4/super, battlefield3 /badcompany2. And in my feild of play (FPS-first person shooter) you need SPEED!!!. In AVA, with my 9800 i ran 1920x1080p (big screens native res) in 2 ways, one was I want to pretend I can play this free game the way it was meant to be played (max all) and the other was damn Im getting killed play faster (no frills). I got from 200-80 fps, and that could be in a matter of seconds. That annoying spike and fall , not to mention the horrible, nvyscc584. (whatever) display driver has stopped responding" messages drove me insane. Hearing my player die yet seeing nothing. I have a game called rFactor, racing sim, nothing to special on grfx. But the card really did struggle, and blue screened a ton in this game, Now I replaced that card with my new HD5770 Hawk (with plans on crossfire'n a 2nd one this weekend) that I have clocked up to 1009mhz core, and 1339mhz mem core. I found it easy to get up and running, get the drivers and updates. Started over clocking and volting right out the box. And only done a important game only benchmark test sesson, I found some interesting things out. For starters,AVA seems to fuck everyones system up bad. MY ATI is doing ok in AVA simmilar setings getting the same random 200-89 fps. ??? Did I not tune something

wtf
I can already notice the difference in the two. The Nvidias are focused solely, and mark my words, solely for beauty. This ATI looks nothing like the NVidia in some games. (in my case the 2 most important games I have the opposite effect. :(
rFactor runs faster on the ati card. But at the sake of visual appeal. Shits ugly and wrinkly, if I turn on AA settings it says good nigh t. :P
Now , the other hand, if you are a bf3 player. the 9800 was barfing and puking while attempting to play it on a medium setting (some low res i picked like 1050x some crap WINDOWED!!) minimal detail . The fps would go from playable to wth? The HD 5770 on the other hand , had me scratching my head. I had to stop and look at the settings, @ native 1920x1080 with settings on high, no lies here, it was fucking fun!! For the first time! The majority of my games are doing better with the HAWK 5 series card. The PhysX games are the ones that fail for me still, I dont have a fast PC. But the trade off is honestly the visual quality. But think about this, if you are playing any game, and you have time to check out the scenery, that must be one hell of a game . -.- The DX11 games And newer games looked AND played better on my HAWk. right now Im going to test /compare RAGE, and let you guys know. But its honestly up to the individual whos buying the card. One is a pretty thing, one is a burly thing! I would say, its like the peanut butter vs jelly, or torque vs HP. But Im going to stick with ATI, 2 Hawks cost me less than 1 9800GTX+OC 1gb. And they will out perform it too.

Derp says:

ATI cards are cooler than nVidia cards, core and mem speed have little impact on game play while its more the gpu architecture. ATI uses more stream processors for more power while nvidia is in the dark with their clock speeds.

6990 = 2,549,760
590 = 645,120

PS don't crossfire, its a waist you can just put two cards in.

Santanu says:

ATI is better

Punn says:

My nVidia GeForce GT 440 died after a few months, maybe because of overheating of me playing Skyrim way too much (94 hours on medium 1440x900) But my Radeon HD 4550 (that is not meant for gaming) has lasted a lot longer then my GT 440. Yes, I have used it for playing games.

ganja says:

ATI is better than nVidia!

Tommo says:

and i must say, as much as i slagged ATI off for allowing their latest and greatest cards to fail on me, i am buying ANOTHER Radeon 6970 as they have fixed some of the MAJOR issues those cards had at release... that and my nVidia GTX295 is starting to SUCK due to its age... 2008 - 2012... its done some bloody good service in its days!

Links to nVidia vs ATI Benchmarks

When it comes to choosing between ATI and Nvidia, or between different models of the same video card, your best bet is to check the different benchmarks online. Don't rely on the hardware specifications alone, because if a graphics card has faster memory and a higher GPU clock it doesn't necessarily mean it will also result in more FPS in that newest shooter game.

  • Tom's Hardware always has a lot of detailed reviews and benchmarks of the newest and most powerful graphics cards available.

  • Passmark Software offers charts showing the performance of thousands of different graphics cards. Just note that the synthetic benchmark they use doesn't necessarily indicate the "real life" performance in video games.

  • 3DMark is the most popular video card benchmark software. You can test the performance of your system yourself and see the benchmark results of other users.

  • Newegg is one of the best places to buy computer hardware online. More importantly, you can read hundreds of graphics card reviews from real users there.

Nvidia has an old architecture and lacks of good Power Consumption and Temps, so ATI/AMD wins.
For those loosers that say nVidia is more performant, go search up more info about it... nVidia is paying a lot of game companies for their games to run well on nVidia cards and "less" well with their AMD counterparts... Also, since nVidia is richer, they got better driver support.

So overall, it is unfair for ATI that they cannot bribe game companies and have better software performance...

Bottom line if you want a video card that will work with every program you got without a glitch then go Nvidia! I've ran both and while not unhappy with ATI(AMD) cards, I have on more then one occasion purchased a game that I had problems trying to play, and had to snoop online to try and find a fix or wait for a dam patch to come out.....with Nvidia NEVER, they always work period! You ATI guys can keep preaching about the cost savings we know you need to comfort yourselves that you made the right purchase lol..

I think nVidia is by far a better card overall. I do a lot of visual effects/game programming/game playing and nothing beats an nvidia 590. ATI is great if you're short on cash but a liquid cooled 590 or 580 is unstoppable. AND THAT"S ALL AT THE LOW END OF THE SPECTRUM!!!!!!!!!! Let's not even get into the Quadro series which is what Hollywood lives on (well ILM builds their own GPUs from scratch but outside of them). As far as PhysX goes I have yet to see a game that didn't benefit from an nvidia card. ATI does have slightly better anti-ailiasing but only when compared to cheaper nvidia cards. Give me a 6GB Quadro over any ATI and I'm sailing.

Nvidia is a hype ATI rules I've used a lot of Nvidia cards and all they do is overheat. ATI is more stable with power and designer wise. For now Sept 2011 ATI rules with dual gpu's and mobile gpu with stability(cooling) wise. Than Nvidia forcing a single gpu for power. to Nvidia engineers men make it real 2 medium power heads are better than a 1 powerful one which will breakdown and wear out easily.

"This should be illegal. It is like a car company locking your car to max speed of 30MPH if you want to go faster you have to buy 4 new tires."
That is the silliest thing I have heard all day, most fast cars are limited to 150mph for insurance and safety purposes.
you wouldn't buy 4 new tires you just remove the limiter, or in the case of GFX card overclock!!!

nvidia is better in my opinion (from a pure gaming, single gpu perspective). sure, ati has way more raw gpu power than nvidia, but the games that make it REALLY hard to get atleast 60 fps, are usually optimized for nvidia. nvidia's fermi architecture is currently better at tessellation performance than ati's 6000 series gpu. tessellation is what really rapes today's gfx cards. plus, to rape ati even harder, a nvidia graphics card can be overclocked way more than the ati card in the same price range, giving it higher performance anyways. nvidia's control center is better. nvidia plays nicer with windows gaming in linux, which is important to some people, like me. the only areas i can think of where ati beats nvidia is when playing on resolutions higher than 1080p with antialiasing turned off, or in a few games where ati just happens to beat nvidia, like aliens vs predators, but they are pretty rare so it's not a strong advantage anyways. so, basically unless you are a friggin rich ass bastard who can spend more than a $1000 on graphical equipment alone, nvidia beats the crap out of ati. remember, this is just general nvidia vs ati. some manufacturers build better cards than others.

Both brands have good cards and el-cheapo cards. There is no "best". It just comes down to person choice. (chocolate or vanilla). Having said that, I have had less trouble with nVidia cards, and chhose to run those.

    Radeon HD 6850 - $159.99

CHeap card, but it kicks ass. From the same website here are price v performance ratings:
