The Astor Place Cube, East Village, New York City

The East Village's most popular public art sculpture, The Astor Place Cube.

A view of the iconic Astor Place Cube, a public art sculpture also known as The Alamo located in the East Village, New York City.

Some history and context: "Alamo, also known as the Astor Place Cube, or simply The Cube, is an outdoor sculpture by Bernard (Tony) Rosenthal, located on Astor Place, on the island of Manhattan in New York City. It takes the form of a black cube, 8 feet (2.4 m) long on each side, mounted on a corner. The cube is made of Cor-Ten steel and weighs about 1,800 pounds (820 kg). The faces of the cube are not flat but have various indentations, protrusions, and ledges. It is not widely known as Alamo, the name given on a small plaque on one corner of the base, which was selected by the artist's wife because its scale and mass reminded her of the Alamo Mission. Generally it is simply called The Astor Place Cube or The Cube." Source

Bow Bridge in Autumn, Central Park, New York City

A romantic view of Bow Bridge located in Central Park, New York City.

A beautiful early Autumn view of Bow Bridge in Central Park, New York City.

Some history and context for Bow Bridge: "When Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) and Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) designed Central Park in 1858, they developed an innovative interwoven transportation system of pedestrian paths, bridle trails, and carriage drives. Since the park is only one-half mile wide, the designers had to create a compact system of bridges and arches that allowed for separate levels of pathways. Vaux and his assistant Jacob Wrey Mould (1825-1886) created 35 unique structures, each with its own distinct style. They used brick, granite, marble, cast iron, and rustic wood and fashioned rusticated gneiss boulders out of the rock outcrops. Subsequent changes in the system of paths led to tearing down three of the original arches and the construction of four others.

Bow Bridge, shaped like an archer's bow, was built between 1859 and 1862. It connects the Ramble and Cherry Hill, and spans more than 60 feet of the Lake. Because the south bank was higher than the north, construction of the cast iron bridge included raising the height of its northern abutment. Janes, Kirkland, and Co., the firm responsible for the dome of The Capitol in Washington, D.C., did the ironwork for the span of Bow Bridge. Vaux and Mould created the ornamental iron railing that incorporates elements of Gothic, Neo-Classical, and Renaissance design." Source.

Twenty-three of his works are displayed in public in New York City. His major work is a 220-foot (67 m) , 12-piece "Zodiac Screen" which he sculpted in 1960. At the time it was the largest sculpture in the world, commissioned by Pan-American Airlines for its terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and now owned and stored by the New York Port Authority."Source
