Oatmeal: Nutricious, Delicious, the Ultimate Comfort Food

I love just a plain bowl of oatmeal. I insist on the Old Fashioned kind that has to be cooked on the stove. When you eat the Old Fashioned must cook kind, you can see each piece separately in the bowl and if you eat slowly enough, you can feel that in your mouth.

There is also the steel cut kind that comes from far off lands. But I am not a fanatic, good old Quaker Oats Old Fashioned will do be me just fine.

I have memories of cold Iowa mornings when one parent made me a hot steaming bowl of oatmeal. Nothing fancy, just milk and sugar added. Mom liked to make it with butter instead of milk, but I liked milk.

As I grew up and wanted to cut back on refined sugar, I started boiling it in apple juice to sweeten it. Several years back when I was balancing protein/carbs/fat, I came up with the oatmeal omelet that you see below.

I have used oatmeal for facials, in soap and when I have had rashes I have bathed in oatmeal.

Forget cotton, it is oatmeal that makes the fabric of our lives.

Oatmeal Has Always Been There for Us

But We Haven't Always Known Just How Healthy It Really Is

It actually comes from groats and can be eaten in many form. Steal cut is little tiny pieces. My favorite, rolled oats is what Quakers Old Fashioned is.

It has long been a staple of breakfast, but there are lots of uses. I use it in meatloaf instead of breadcrumbs I think it tastes better and is probably healthier.

A couple of decades ago we started hearing that it was good for cholesterol, lowering the bad, even rising the good. It is good for the skin, used for medicinal purposes as well as in beauty regimes.

It is a great grain for the growing number of people who are discovering wheat allergies. I have mixed it in pancakes to cut down on the wheat.

If you know of other uses for oatmeal, something I forgot, please mention it in the guest book.
Oh, and don't forget to leave your recipe for your favorite oatmeal cookie or dessert! And vote for it! Well, I have to go now, I have to decide between a bowl of plan oatmeal or an oatmeal omelet!

Margo's Masterpiece Oatmeal Omelet: Total Nutrition And Delicious

Ok, lots of people make faces when they hear about this, but it is delicious.

One Omelet:

Take 2 cups of water to a full boil

Add 1 cup of Quaker Old Fashioned Oatmeal, stir

Quickly add whites of 2 eggs, stir. Finish as per oatmeal instructions.

One minute after cooking place in bowl, ad Picante Sauce, (mild or spicy to taste) and 1 tablespoon flax oil. For a special treat and an added boost to your metabolism ad cinnamon to taste, I use 1/4 tablespoon. Yum.

.Well, Apparently Not Always Comfort Food

Instant Oatmeal Is to Oatmeal As Confetti Is to Brown Rice

I will go out on a limb with a bold statement. I don't eat instant oatmeal. I tried it once, and will never do it again. It is over processed and isn't really oatmeal at all.

Do You Agree That Instant Oatmeal Isn't Real Oatmeal?

Sure it is. And you could spice instant oatmeal with Asian flavors too!

sdrury123 says:

I love any kind of oatmeal, instant or no. My favorite was Quaker instant French Vanilla but I haven't seen it around lately. We've been eating the 5-minute kind at work every morning for the last few weeks. Some people like it thick, others like it runny.

lakeerieartists says:

I have to say that I think instant oatmeal is real oatmeal. :)

JudyDunn says:

I am partial to some instant hot cereal...mostly oatmeal...from Trader Joe's. It has flaxseed, and dried blueberries or dried cranberries. If I use a little less water, and let it sit for a minute or two, it works for me. I love "real" oatmeal, but I don't always have enough time.

aj2008 says:

I eat a lot of porridge - if you are sensitive to wheat like I am, then oats give you more choice at breakfast time. But sorry Margo, I have to confess I use the instant kind for porridge - well I do have two girls to get off to school in the morning! But will you please, forgive my disloyalty if I tell you that I do use porridge oats in another recipe and that is for Apple Crumble. It is a recipe that has been passed to me from my Mum. I replace half the flour (wheat free of course) with porridge oats. It gives a brilliant texture and is Yummy! You can find the recipe on my Autumn lens.

I will try your omlette recipe though and then I will report back!

You Are Right On And Thanks for Standing Up for Real Oatmeal!

Jolene_Belmain says:

Instant doesn't have all of the beneficial factors like the original oatmeal does. It's the same as instant rice (minute rice)... it's gross and not at all beneficial to your body.

darciefrench says:

You bet- loved your intro description of slow cooked oats -:)

JJNW says:

I like instant okay, but my grandfather (who grew up on a farm) said NO WAY was instant the same food! lol - I did have some my friend hand-rolled and it was incredible. Hard choice, but I guess I will agree with you.

Swisstoons says:

I prefer the Old Fashioned to the "Quick" variety by the same company. But the very worst is the stuff that comes in that packet. Oatmeal? Who are they kidding?

fanfreluche says:

It's bad, I tried once, and hated it. Plus in Canada they add lots of salt to the instant mix, so it's bad for your health. The real thing as nothing added, you choose what you want in it.

To Me Quaker Oats IS Oatmeal

I grew up in Iowa. My mother's best friend moved to Cedar Rapids. On our first visit there I asked "Phew, what is the smell?" My mother replied that it was the Quaker Oats factory. I think I may have related that for one minute to my favorite none dessert food. I happily learned to compartmentalize.

"Quaker Oats Man - One of the oldest advertising mascots in America, the Quaker Oats Man became the first registered trademark for a breakfast cereal in 1877. Through the years, many have mistaken The Quaker Oats Company mascot as William Penn or Ben Franklin, but in truth, the image of a man dressed in the Quaker garb was purposely chosen to reflect the "Quaker" faith and its values of honesty, integrity, and purity. Surprisingly, the actual Society of Friends (a.k.a. the "Quakers") went to court to have their association with the cereal removed, but they lost the court battle."
