Presidential Cupcakes at the Smithsonian

Obama and Lincoln cupcake art installation by Zilly Rosen at Smithsonian American Art Museum

In February of 2009, Zilly Rosen, owner of Buffalo, NY's Zillycakes, created a cupcake portrait for the Smiithsonian. The cupcake portrait showed the newly elected President Obama alongside President Abraham Lincoln. Titled A New Birth of Freedom, the piece honored President Obama's recent inauguration and President Lincoln's 200th birthday. The edible art display used over 5,600 chocolate, vanilla and red velvet cupcakes and lasted a total of 5 hours before museum goers were invited to help eat it. However the Smithsonian piece was not Rosen's first foray into Obama cupcakes. She gained national news coverage after making a 1240 minicupcake portrait of Obama for volunteers at Obama's 2008 election headquarters in Buffalo.

Easy Obama Cupcakes

Obama Cakes

You needn't be a professional cupcake designer or spend hours in the kitchen for these easy Obama cupcakes. To make these cupcakes, you will need round shortbread cookies, red icing, blue icing and white icing. On the flat side of the cookie, make 3 red stripes with 2 white stripes in between on the bottom half of the cookie. Make an upside down circle in blue icing on the top half. Fill in the inside of the blue half circle with white icing. Let the icing set and then place on top of your favorite iced cupcake.

Using this method, you could also completely ice one side of the cookie and write words or phrases such as OBAMA 2012, I <3 Barack, CHANGE or HOPE.

Not an Obama fan but I respect him as my president and I respect his cupcakes as well. If someone gave me an Obama cupcake I'd certainly enjoy it. But make it w/ stevia instead of sugar, please!
