Barack was Barry!
Barack Obama is actually Barack Obama, Jr. (His Kenyan father is Barack Obama, Sr.) As a child, Obama's family called him Barry instead of Barack. But when he went to college, he chose to be called by his proper name Barack which means "gift from God."

- Barack has several possible roots, none of which mean gift from god. "Lightning" (Hebrew Barak origin), "one who receives blessing" (Arabic), or "charisma" (Islamic Sufi tradition) are all possible meanings.
