Obesity Facts - Are You Obese?
Obesity is a serious problem that most people tend to underestimate. Sure, you might be a bit chubby but you surely aren't obese ... or are you? However, once you start to delve into a few obesity facts, you may be surprised to learn about the far reaching affects of obesity.
Since 1980, obesity rates have doubled among the American people. It's now a proven fact that nearly one third of American adults are obese! That means it is probable that either you or someone you may know is afflicted with obesity. For the first time in 200 years, experts think that our life expectancy rate may lower, due to problems with obesity.
Today's young people will need to worry about getting sick and dying sooner if they continue to get obese. These extra health concerns add an additional burden to society in terms of money and resources.
Surprisingly, the definition of obesity applies to more than just the morbidly overweight. If you are 20% over the "common" weight for your height and age, then you are obese. So, if the insurance chart says that you should weigh 135 pounds, you are obese if you weigh 162 pounds instead.
Of course, there are more scientific measurements for this. Using your BMI to check your fat percentage can give a much more accurate idea of your body make-up than old fashioned weight charts, which ignore people with a high muscle percentage. To be considered obese, your BMI needs to be over 30.
The obesity facts concerning children are the most shocking. With the obesity rates among children and teens rapidly on the rise, blame is being placed on them spending more time watching TV and eating several non-nutritious fattening snacks. Unfortunately, this accelerates their risk of developing health problems that were once only seen in adults. These health risks include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, poor sleep quality, joint problems, liver disease, Type 2 diabetes, and even depression. Not to mention that overweight children have a huge chance of becoming overweight adults.
Health risks such as stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, cancer and gall bladder disease can affect obese adults more so than adults at a healthier weight. This can cost you your enjoyment of life and hurt you financially with rising health care costs.
Why aren't the negative obesity facts decreasing the rates? It can be challenging trying to eat well and get enough exercise in today's busy world. How many fast food burgers met their end from you during this past week because you were pressed for time? If you are one of the greater than 76% of U.S. adults who eat less than their recommended 5 fruits and vegetables a day, and also work at a sedentary job, chances are high that you either are or will become obese.
By making it a priority, you can fight obesity with exercise and a proper diet. There's no time like the present to start. The only loss you'll suffer is your extra weight.
