Tweak Oblivion!!!!

Ok so you've found this page in the hopes of getting Oblivion to run on your ancient computer. (Or at least I needed help tweaking oblivion to run on my horribly old pc) Or perhaps you have a screamin' fast awesome gaming rig and want to test the limits of your amazing hardware. Thankfully you've come to the right place.

Oblivion can be an awe-inspiring experience if you go about it the right way. Below I'm going to help you get the most of your gaming fun and hopefully beautify your Oblivion experience even further!

Wanna fight?

Tweaking Oblivion: Part Uno

The first thing we're going to do is to set graphic settings inside Oblivion. Set your preferences for viewing distance and graphic levels (Test to make sure your computer can handle this setting, move your character around and take notice if you have any stuttering or slowing in framerate). Some useful settings to disable for performance issues are "shadows on grass" and "shadow filtering" as they as are big frame-rate destroying options. Once you've selected the appropriate graphical settings exit your game.

Next we're going to go into the Oblivion.ini file. Make sure you back this file up and make a copy of it before tweaking with the one in your Oblivion folder. This file is found in your \My Documents\My Games\Oblivion in your user directory.

Tweaking Oblivion: Part two

Adding blood that lasts longer than 10 seconds!

Before we begin the following tweaks will make your game look amazing. However, you will probably encounter crashes on exiting and other bugs. If these bugs are consistent just copy your "safe" .ini file you backed up earlier and add in tweaks one by one.

Alright first things first. VIOLENCE. You want blood right! In the vanilla version of the game blood dissapears after about fifteen seconds or so. Well we're going to fix that.

In your .ini. file add:

fDecalLifetime=1200.000 (default 10)
iMaxDecalsPerFrame=500 (default 10)

This will make blood hang around for 20 minutes and show 500 decals (stab wounds). Thankfully this uses almost no memory as well so you will definetely want to do this.

Oh Crap it's a troll!

Tweaking Oblivion: part tres

Upgrading the landscape and Water textures

Now we're going to tweak the landscape of Oblivion and make it more appealing (than it already is).

In your .ini file:

uGridstoLoad = 9 (default 5)
uExterior Cell Buffer = 100 (default 36)

*Importante* Grids need to be an odd number in order to avoid graphical glitches. Also tweaking this portion will increase load times but hey it looks super amazing I guess it's worth it!

Due to the increased memory requirements of our previous weak we're going to fix it with this line which also increases overall performance of the game.

iPreloadSizeLimit= 104857600 (default 26214400)

Ok so now you have amazing landscapes but water looks the same! Onto the next tweak...

bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=1 (default 0)
bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=1 (default 0)
bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=1 (default 0)
bUseWaterReflectionsActors=1 (default 0)
uSurfaceFPS=15 (default 12)

Turn off 'Actors' and 'Misc' if you want a balance between the main environment (landmass, buildings) being reflected and performance.

Happy Arboreal Friends (sweet-looking trees)
bForceFullLOD=1 (default 0)

Increasing performance in Oblivion.

Vroom vroom.

Ok now onto improving performance.

First things first here you probably should update your video card drivers and definetely your sound card drivers immediately!

This is a link to oblivion compatible drivers if you use NVIDIA:

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html

Next your going to want to defrag your computer. This will improve load times tenfold in Oblivion and speed up pretty much everything else on your computer.

Performance tips: Continued!

Here's some more performance tips:

- Tweak down the grass level by editing the .ini file

iMinGrassSize=130 (default 80)
fGrassEndDistance=8000.0000
fGrassStartFadeDistance=7000.0000

iMinGrassSize reduces grass density which will make your computer actually... run the game!

-if you have a comp with low memory try this:

bPreemptivelyUnloadCells=1 (default 0)

-These setting tend to prevent stutters and slowdowns.

bUseThreadedBlood=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedMorpher=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1 (default 0)
iNumHavokThreads=3 (default 1)
bBackgroundPathing=1 (default 0)
iThreads=10 (default 3)
iOpenMPLevel=10 (default 10)

What do all these attributes mean?!

In Oblivion, (and other similar rpgs) attributes help define your characters strengths and weaknesses. These attributes are as follows:

* Agility
* Endurance
* Intelligence
* Luck
* Personality
* Speed
* Strength
* Willpower

These attributes will have a base value and can be changed by both leveling up and/or wearing magical equipment. (can also be modified through magic, disease, potions etc.) Green means it is a positive boost, red means a subtraction to your statistics.

Your attributes can be maxed at 100, however there are a few quests that can take you over this limit. Magic can help your attributes by quite a bit. The current value of an attribute can be boosted past 100, and many, but not all, benefits of the attribute continue to increase for values greater than 100. Most aspects of game play are based upon the current value of the attribute.

Oblivion Mod Central!

The following subsections will contain information on some of the coolest mods available for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. I am going to sort these mods available free for download by mod type. i.e. combat, performance mods etc.

Enjoy and happy downloading!

Combat Mod list

This section deals with improvements to the combat system in Oblivion.
Deadly Reflex 3
This mod adds new combat moves for the main character and NPCs to use.
Shield bashing, dodging, flipping, etc.

Oh and you can decapitate your opponent!
Thieves Arsenal
This brilliant and popular mod adds many new tools to the game that thiefs can use to aid their stealth techniques. Unlike vanilla, stealth can be used to avoid combat now. Improved AI accompanies these new tools as well.

Compilation Mods

Unofficial Oblivion Patch
Very important mod and is definetely a must download. It may cause problems with OOO... Just load this before you install OOO and you'll be ok.
Portable Campsite
Just like the name suggests, this mod adds portable camping gear including a tent and fire etc.

NPC Changes

Tamriel NPCS Revamped
This mod is really great at fixing some of the horrific facial textures in default vanilla oblivion. It gives the different races unique characteristics. Nords, for example, are much more rugged looking, similar to that of a Viking. Dark Elves are given a more "native warrior" kind of look. The mod can be used with facial texture enhancing mods like Natural Faces without any problems.

Environment Changes

Cities Alive At Night
Makes city lights appear when looking at them from a distance.
Immersive Sound
Makes vanilla sound like @&#^$!!!! This mod is also compatible with OOO.
