Stay Healthy Or Get Well: It's Key

Musicians suffer with health problems just like everybody else. So what makes us different? For starters, many of the injuries that musicians face are musculoskeletal (repetitive strain injuries) and neurologic (carpal tunnel, focal dystonia) in nature. Many symptoms are managed rather than cured. A medical problem that may be a nuisance to a non-musician has the potential to end a musician's career.

Prevention, Prevention, Prevention

There are things that you can do.

Historically musicians suffered in silence for fear of being stigmatized or of losing one's job. Often doctors will not be familiar with the evaluation and treatment of the injuries and diseases which can debilitate a musician, so musicians will need to seek highly specialized physicians and therapists. The good news is that now, more than ever, the word is out: Musicians just like athletes have injuries. Conservatories are teaching the realities and risks involved with playing professionally; injury prevention appears more commonly as part of the musical training; and with the web it is easier and easier to locate information and help.

Biomechanics And Reedmaking

A considerable portion of an oboist's career is spent dealing with oboe reeds and making oboe reeds. Reedmkaing is a physically and mentally taxing activity. For that reason, my book on oboe reedmaking includes a section on biomechanics and reedmaking. This important section covers biomechanical advantage, the workspace, leverage, load, grip, focal point, proprioception, and other related topics. Visit www.oboeabode.com for more detail.

Pete Egoscue

Posture, Bio-Mechanics and Pain Relief

Pete Egoscue, a Vietnam Veteran, returned from the war in need of intesive physical rehabilitation. After completing prescribed military treatments he remained a shadow of his former self. Frustrated he began a pursuit for better health and a fully functioning body. Through his studies he arrived at exercises, strecthes and methods to analyse, improve bio-mechanics, posture and health. I highly recommend these books to understand the body's mechanics, prevent, manage, or even eliminate pain.

Many Problems Can Be Avoided or Minimized with Planning and Good Habits

Here are a few of the areas of importance for a musician to be healthy enough to work in the field and be well enough to enjoy everyday life.
  1. Hearing loss is not something that musicians worry about early on in the game, but like everyone else our hearing may go with age. Some instrumentalists are at a greater risk due to the specific instrument that they play or because of their location in the orchestra or band.
  2. Inadequate eyesight. This is a tough one. As musicians age I know that most will get separate glasses for separate tasks: reed making glasses, music glasses, everyday glasses.
  3. Muscle aches, pains, strains.
  4. Joint aches, pains, degeneration, diseases.
  5. Tendonitis.

Managing the Decibels

NYT: 4/20/08: No Fortissimo? Symphony Told to Keep It Down
"Tests showed that the average noise level in the orchestra during the piece, "State of Siege," by the composer Dror Feiler, was 97.4 decibels, just below the level of a pneumatic drill and a violation of new European noise-at-work limits. Playing more softly or wearing noise-muffling headphones were rejected as unworkable....

Alan Garner, an oboist and English horn player who is the chairman of the players' committee at the Royal Opera House, said that he and his colleagues had been told that they would have to wear earplugs during entire three-hour rehearsals and performances. "It's like saying to a racing-car driver that they have to wear a blindfold... "I've spent nearly 30 years in music and I know all about noise, and occasionally, if I'm not playing and there's a loud bit next to me, I might shove my fingers in my ears for a few bars. But I have yet to find a musician who says they can wear earplugs and still play at the same level of quality."

Core Integration and Feldenkrais Method®, An offshoot of Alexander, works better for some people

Core Integration and Feldenkrais Method®
The DellaGrotte- Somatic Training Institute, located in Stow, Massachusetts offers a new approach to body management, wellness, exercise and fitness. The Core Integration method is based on the principles of Dr. M.Feldenkrais plus principles of biomechanics, exercise physiology and somatic arts
DellaGrotte Somatics: Feldenkrais & Core Integration Training: CD's, DVD's, Cassetes
I highly recommend the DVDs, CDs and book. A great method for learning how the body functions and ways to lengthen, strengthen and move through the core. In many was this method has more relevance and applicability to playing the oboe than the Alexander Technique. Dellagrotte Somatics is dynamic approach to movement and breathing.

Fitness Bands- To be Used with The Dellagrotte DVD

Latex-free. You can determine the level of resistance.

Product Description
Latex-Free Exercise Bands are made of synthetic rubber and provide the same performance and benefits as natural rubber latex bands without the possible complications experienced by those with latex allergies. The only resistive exercise bands endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Ideal for building upper and lower body strength for rehabilitation or fitness. Whether building strength after shoulder or knee surgery or improving athletic performance, our bands, tubing and corresponding resistance exercise programs can be easily and economically used for any exercise program. The progressive resistance of our products parallels the basic concepts of building strength and mobility. As each level is mastered, the resistance can be increased with ability. In general, tan and yellow are used for early rehabilitation or very frail individuals. The most common resistances are red, green & blue. Black, silver and gold are typically used by athletes. The use of elastic resistance rather than weight-bearing exercises minimizes pressure on the joints and decreases the possibility of incurring other injuries. They can be used while traveling, sitting at home or even in the office. Uses for the Thera-Band Bands include: exercise, gym, balance, fitness, birthing, yoga, pilates, and stability and resistance.

FT.com - Why Alexander truly is great
"Why Alexander truly is great" by Harry Eyres, writer in the Financial Times

"Dewey was learning the first lesson of the Alexander Technique, which is that body and mind are indissolubly linked. Alexander states that "No human activity can be said to be wholly 'physical' or wholly 'mental', but all human activity, in whatever sphere, is psycho-physical activity."

This discovery hit Dewey with the force of a revelation. "The question of integration of mind-body in action is the most practical of all questions we can ask of our civilisation ... Until this integration is effected ... we shall continue to live in a society in which a soulless materialism is compensated for by soulful, but futile, idealism and spiritualism.""

The Musician's Hand: His Currency

Some of the most common and most debilitating injuries for a musician are injuries of the hand and upper extremities: muscle, tendon, joints, nerves. This book is a medical textbook that details the diagnosis and treatment of the musician including the social, psychological and physical dimensions. The authors are a neurologist and a hand surgeon. One of the more remarkable operations shown is the transplantation of the great toe to the hand in order that a bagpipe player may continue to play after having lost his thumb. This book is wonderful for players of all instruments: keyboard, woodwind, brass, guitar, etc.

The Human Hand in Outer Space

The human hand is so complex that NASA has offered $200,000 in prize money to the person or people who can design a proper glove for wear in space. Writes Jack Hitt in the NYT Magazine: "Gary L. Harris, a giant in the world of space gear, told me that "flexing the hand in space is like squeezing a tennis ball." Harris is an industrial designer and the author of a book called "The Origins and Technology of the Advanced Extravehicular Space Suit." "There are 200-something bones in the adult body," he said, "and something like 26 of them are in our hand. No mechanical device made yet can duplicate it, yet it has the weakest muscles." Great stuff. Musicians really need this. I used to be a pro musician when I was younger. That was the most unhealthy period in my life. In those days I lived only through my head, my hands and my ears. The rest was all going to hell. Thank heaven I started to learn about my body! Keep up the good work, thanks.

I never really thought about the injuries a musician can get, but I certainly understand. As a flautist, my hands often get sore from gripping my flute. Long practices are hard on any instrument.
