"The first secret of reedmaking. Have a sharp knife. The second secret of reedmaking. Have a sharp knife." -Stevens Hewitt*
Your knife is your secret weapon against bad reeds. But what's the secret to getting the knife sharp? There is no secret, just hard work and practice. Learn the principles of sharpening, purchase some gear and try your hand. Sharpening is not as easy as it may look, and folks of all ages and both genders experience frustration and ask many questions. If you would like to learn more, improve your skills, or try something new: Explore. Books. Tools. Methods. Links. Discussion Groups and more.
Into to Sharpening?

Oboists rely on a variety of abrasives to sharpen their knives: Carborundum, or silicon carbide (SiC), India®, Hard Arkansas (novaculite), diamond, ceramic, steel, leather, water stones and even sandpaper. You will need a series of grits to sharpen, hone and maintain your edge. You will need to determine which materials work for you and which you can afford. There are many good choices but sharpening is an art unto itself. You will need to understand sharpening theory and apply it to reed knife sharpening. You will need to devise a series of angles to optimize the knife's cutting abilities and extend its edge's lifespan. I suggest these books and articles to help you with those decisions.

The Scary Sharp Method
I am a big fan of the Scary Sharp System and thank John Towle, amateur oboist and student of Bob Hubbard, for introducing me to this effective method of sharpening. Click here for an entertaining post by the "inventor" of the Scary Sharp Method. The features of this method that attract me are many: its affordability; many grits of sandpaper, and even leather may be used; it is larger in size than most sharpening stones; the glass will not "dish" with use; the base is heavier and extremely stable. See photo comparing a 6" Norton Stone with the Scary Sharp set-up. Don't bother trying to save money by cutting the glass yourself, just contact Keith at Hand American. He sells a wonderful Corian base and all the trimmings.

Waterstones
There has been a current running toward waterstones but these have not been universally adopted by oboists. Some reasons cited: portability, messiness and price. Norton®, Shapton and Sointu are a few names. Jende recommends the Shapton Stones to sharpen their knives. Click here for a waterstone grit chart.

Diamond Sharpening
The DMT Diamond Stone has replaced the Carborundum and even some of the finer grits that we need to regrind, start and maintain the edge. Diamond has the advantage of cutting quickly. Though the surface tends to wear over time, these stones have fewer problems related to loading. Recently DMT has released the
D8EE Dia-Sharp® bench stone (8000 mesh). Billed as the finest grit bonded diamond abrasive bench stone available today this may be of interest to some. For an animated debate on the merits of the monocrystalline diamond surface and the polycrystalline surface click here.

To the purist mechanical means are heretical, but for oboists sometimes we just need to flatten that blade, sharpen the edge and move on. The leather wheel keeps the edge going. There are a few forums where Tormek uses gather to compare notes and ask questions. One of them, The SharpTools USA Discussion Board, is moderated by Jeff Farris. Sharpening with Porcelain
- Blade Cone Classic
- advantages:
*one hand operation, absolutely easy to use
*perfect sharpening angle guaranteed
*saving material, durable, hygienic
*high precision
*high-quality designInternational design award Baden-Württemberg focus silver
*best sharpening results, ideal for all types of knifes (exept ceramic knifes)
The Blade Cone is perfectly designed. A functional sculpture for easy knife sharpening.
The cone is already sharped in the right angle to sharpen a knife. Just hold your knife straight (Figure 1), as if you like to cut something. Then draw each side of the knife edge with a gentle movement 3 or 4 times
over the ceramic surface of the cone (Figure 2 and 3).
That is all!
Porcelain is a very valuable natural material. It`s distinctive character, the shiny white, its warmth of touch, the beautiful surfaces and the extreme durability makes it unique. It needs to be handled with great care and experience in order to create beautiful products.
Ceramic has always been used for sharpening knifes. Expecially porcelain is perfectly suited to give an edge the finisching touch and to maintain a good knife sharp.
